| I'm working on a system that needs to have Lotus Notes set as the default
email client. I make the appropriate change in the Programs tab of IE6's
Internet Options. I can close IE, re-open, and check the setting and it still
says Lotus Notes. A week or two later I find that it reverted back to
Outlook. I've done this three times during the last few weeks and it keep
reverting. Any suggestions?

Microsoft Outlook updates change the default mail handler to Microsoft
Outlook
http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#13 (ignore the reference to OE)
Related: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/933450
To avoid this "hijacking":
1. Remove Outlook from your install of Office (assuming you don't use it);
2. Don't install any Outlook Updates offered by Office/Microsoft/Automatic
Update.

I have to use Outlook (2003) -- it feeds my PDA. But I want to keep OE6 as my
default email handler.
What can I do to prevent Outlook hijacking that status every time I go into
it?

IE and OE both have / Tools / Options setting to fix default email handler.

Yes, they have. And each time I go into Outlook, they change.

Try posting in microsoft.public.outlook for more expert help with disabling
that. You might crosspost to
microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6_outlookexpress as well.

I'm afraid the only way to avoid the behavior is to decline any Outlook (OL)
updates. IOW, your default Mail Client will be hijacked to OL every time
you install any OL update (e.g., the monthly Junk Mail Filter updates).
The Office team and MS is aware of this behavior: They do NOT see it as a
problem and will do nothing to fix it. Go figure.

I'll reconfigure my updates, to be sure nothing gets installed automatically.
IE7 really screwed up two computers; I'll be on my guard against this one
too. Thanks, Bear.
