I can't copy to the cd. The problem is not that it is blank and there is
nothing to look at. The problem is that when I go to copy something,
anything, i keep getting a message that reads "please insert a disk into
drive D:" I have tried to reinstall my drivers, reboot, use different cd's,
change the speed, and use different burning solutions (windows, nero, etc.)
I can play audio cd's, it can read data cd's, but does not recognize that
there is a cd in the drive when the cd is blank. I am running windows xp on
my gateway solo laptop. These are new cd's and I have used them before to
burn data, photos and music from the same drive on the same laptop. I have
re-installed the drivers. still nothing. Any advice is appreciated. |

Check to ensure you have the option to Record on this device enabled. Right
click the drive's icon and select Properties->Recording Tab. Check the box.
If there is no Recording Tab then check here
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q316529
If you have a Samsung drive check here
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308591/
Read through the Problems section at the late Alex Nichol's site here
http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpcd.htm
Another problem could be that the drive is defective. I've seen plenty of
defective burners read discs but are no longer able to write to them.

You can try it in another computer and try the other computer's cd drive in
the original machine. That is the classic test.
Having said that, what specific drive are you using? What program do you
use to access this drive normally? Have you added this drive to your
computer recently?
Be aware that all-in-one drives (cdrw/dvd-rw) are not like the cdrw/dvd-r
drives and Windows will not recognize any disc inserted for writing (not cd
or dvd). It takes third party software. btw, have you tried downloading a
trial copy of Roxio or Nero to see if they can see the disc?
