Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>general (more info?)

Hi,

I have windows XP SP2 installed on my Dell system. sometimes in the
system all application fails to start.
No error message is displayed and nothing happens even on clicking on
them so many times.
even right clicking does not work.
I got an error message sometimes saying "Out of memory or system
resource, close some windows or programs and try again" but sometimes
the resources are not available so windows can not even display that
error pop up message.

If I close some already running apps then everything start working,
but soon after I open a few things same thing repeats and again I am
not able to open anything.

I checked taskManager at the time when the problem happens but
couldn't see any problem,
Here is a summary of taskManager output

Handles: 25032
Threads: 675
Process: 51

Page file is 4.5 GB and only 1.1 GB is used

45MB RAM free out of 1GB, CPU usage 1-2%

I am not able to find what resources are less, Is there any setting on
number of threads/process which can be tweaked.
Has anybody seen this problem, is it Dell specific, because I have
experienced the same problem on all 3 Dell PC's I had, whereas I never
faced anything like this on my assembled PC.

Thanks and Regards
Rahul

I run WinTasks when I get in similar situations. If enough resources
are available to run WinTasks, that is. Sad Then I can see, constantly
updated, the CPU and memory being used by everything running.

I've had a lot of Dell computers and never had this problem so it probably
isn't Dell that is causing this. Have you run an Anti-Virus recently? Have
you checks spyware, etc? Did you look at the processses running in
tasmanger?

Got enought room on your hard drive to run the swap/page file. Have you
set a limit on your swap/page file?
