When I purchased my laptop last December I was promised a free upgrade to
Vista. I now have the upgrade disks. However I have read of various problems
mainly to do with drivers, and I have been warned by my ISP that I may not
get onto the internet because of incompatible driver for the modem. Are the
problems real? Are there corrective downloads?

There are Vista specific newsgroups:

microsoft.public.windows.vista.administration_accounts_password
microsoft.public.windows.vista.file_management
microsoft.public.windows.vista.games
microsoft.public.windows.vista.general
microsoft.public.windows.vista.hardware_devices
microsoft.public.windows.vista.installation_setup
microsoft.public.windows.vista.mail
microsoft.public.windows.vista.music_pictures_video
microsoft.public.windows.vista.networking_sharing
microsoft.public.windows.vista.performance_maintenance
microsoft.public.windows.vista.print_fax_scan
microsoft.public.windows.vista.security

Vista can run well on the right hardware with the right drivers and
software. You need to do some research before making the upgrade to Vista.
Besides running the upgrade advisor check on the tech support web site for
the computer for drivers for Vista and compatibility info. Check on the web
sites for all the hardware manufacturers for Vista compatible drivers.
Check the software authors' web sites for compatibility info. Look through
the posts in and post to one of the Vista newsgroups if you have specific
questions.

Before doing the upgrade image the current system to an external hard drive
using Acronis True Image Home, version 10.

If the upgrade isn't successful you can restore the image made with ATI.
Then you might try a clean install.

Look at using Windows Easy Transfer on the Vista DVD before doing the clean
install to migrate data and settings from the XP installation to the Vista
installation if doing a clean install.

Hello,

If you have been warned by your ISP that your modem would be incompatible, I
would advise checking for Vista compatible drivers for your modem or buying
a new compatible modem altogether.

As for the other hardware components, check your manufacturer's website for
Vista drivers in the drivers section. Since your hardware is new, drivers
should be readily available.

The only issue left is your software. If you are using any old software,
they may need to be updated to be Vista compatible as well.
