Just started getting this balloon message repeatedly with "One of the USB
devices connected to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not
recognize it. For assistance etc." I have tried the following: disconnecting
all devices, rebooting machine with no USB devices attached (same message); I
use a Linksys 4-usb hub -have the safely remove step for everything plugged
in (printer, zip and scanner) - get same message. Also, tried changing cable
to the printer. When I click on the message, I get a screen that the hub has
an unknown device even when nothing is plugged in (including the hub). Any
ideas???

See "General USB troubleshooting in Windows XP"

Followed the "Remove and reinstall all USB controllers" procedure in the
support document; upon rebooting and looking at the System/Hardware tab, all
controllers are back and installed. Of course, the error message persists.
One device is labeled "unknown" and no controller but disabling/removing it
does nothing.
