| When I open most of my picture folders, the thumbnails take an obscenely long
time to load. When I go to save something from the internet, not only does
it take a long time to load the 'my pictures' folder in the 'save as' window,
but then when i finally click save, the internet explorer window that I saved
the picture from stops responding for about 30 seconds while it saves.

How many images are in a folder with the problem? What is obscenely long
mean as a number? What is the configuration of the system, processer speed
and amount of RAM?
What happens if you change the display from thumbnails to something like
list - does it still take a long time?
If your system is not underpowered, or if there aren't that many images in a
folder, then try deleting the thumbs.db file (thumbnail cache). It will be
recreated. If it is corrupted in some fashion doing this will correct it.

# images varies, some folders with only 5 or 6 pictures take a while, as do
some with over 50.
Obscene, as in 30-45 seconds. This is quite a long time to be waiting for
the window to start responding again
I have a 2.8GHz, 1GB Ram, Pentium IV
Actually i just checked and it takes a while to save images even if i'm not
in thumbnail view
I have hidden files viewable, and i've had cached thumbnails for a while,
and yet i don't see a thumbs.db. I've seen it before, just not in every
folder

Try this.
Open Folder Options...
Start | Run | Type: control folders | Click OK |
View tab | UNCheck: Do not cache thumbnails |
Click Apply | Click OK
Do not cache thumbnails
[[Disables automatic storage of folder thumbnails in a cache file. When you
store thumbnail images in a cache file, Windows can reuse them instead of
creating new ones every time you open a folder. If you disable this
automatic storage function, folders that contain thumbnails might take
longer to open.]]
The only disadvantage to this is that every folder with Thumbnail view will
have a thumbs.db file created.
The thumbs.db file is generated by Windows. It is a database file containing
the small images displayed when you view a folder in Thumbnail View (as
opposed to Tile, Icon, List or Detail View).
Thumbs.db file contains the thumbnails for a particular folder.
Windows XP uses a compressed database file (Thumbs.db) to increase
performance. Supposedly.
Note: To see the Thumbs.db file, you must be able to view hidden files. To
view hidden files, click Folder Options on the View menu in Windows
Explorer, click the View tab, click Show All Files and then click OK.
Hide protected operating system files (Recommended) needs to be UNChecked
also.

Hope this helps. Let us know.

Yeah this works.. to an extent. Hmm what seems to be the case is that
unchecking this box does make the thumbnails load more quickly, but only the
ones I already have. When I go to save a picture, it still takes a very long
time to save. However, when I check this box, pictures save really quickly,
it just takes a while to load the folders with a lot of pictures.
Any explanation?

I didn't know if you had just a handful of images or thousands. Yes that's
a long time. Was it always like this? Is this a sudden change? Try
deleting the thumbs.db files, although if it's slow in different folders
with different numbers of images it's hard to believe the thumbs.db file is
corrupt in each one.
