If I copy a folder & then paste as Shortcut, sometimes I get a
Shortcut that sorts with files & sometimes I get 1 that sorts with the
folders. Screenshots are at
http://web.tampabay.rr.com/server/Posts/2typesLinks/

What determines which 1 u get?

Your help is MUCH appreciated. Thanks- bye- Larry

Any advise given is my attempt to show appreciation for all
the excellent help I've received here but I'm no MVP so it
may only apply NUGS (Normally, Usually, Generally, Sometimes Smile

Are you sure that you didn't create one of these shortcuts using "Pin
to Start Menu"?

Hi Larry

I recently noticed this too. It seems to be connected to the Start Menu
and I think it must be by design Smile To make the following clearer, by
"Start Menu folder" I mean the window you get if you right-click on the
Start button and choose Open, or Open All Users. I have many subfolders
under Programs, with shortcuts arranged in categories.

I get a "folder" shortcut if I drag any folder with the right mouse
button into a Start Menu folder and select "Create Shortcut Here". In
the Start Menu itself it gives you a cascading menu of the contents. If
you right-click on this peculiar shortcut and choose Properties, the
icon at the top of the property sheet has a shortcut arrow on it, but
the icon within the Start Menu folder doesn't. Also the property sheet
doesn't have a Shortcut tab.

If i do the same right-drag/create shortcut, with the same folder, to
any other ordinary folder, or to the Desktop, I get a regular "file"
shortcut. To make sure I get one of those into the Start Menu, I now
either:

1. Right-click the wanted folder, choose Create Shortcut Here, then
right-drag the new shortcut into the Start Menu folder and choose Move
Here. (Or you could cut and paste it.)

2. In the Start Menu folder, right-click and choose New > Shortcut,
type in the name of the target folder and let the wizard create it.

Hope this helps. At least it's not just you Smile

Any advise is my attempt to contribute more than I have received but I can only assure you that it works on my PC. GOOD LUCK.

I apologize for taking so long to reply to your post but I had some
medical problems that had to be taken care of.

Your observation regarding the Start Menu was something I missed and
was really a breakthrough. On my PC a shortcut which sorts with the
folders is created in any subfolder of the Start Menu. I did some
experiments and found this did not happen in any other special
folders like Desktop or SendTo or Favorites.

What is interesting is that if you take one of these folder shortcuts
from within the start menu and cut and paste it to any other location
it will continue to sort with the folders and not down with the the
files. So now we have a way of generating one of the shortcuts that
sorts as a folder anywhere we want to.

Comments/suggestions/corrections appreciated.
Your help is MUCH appreciated. Thanks- bye- Larry

Thanks for interesting post... I have noted that sometimes my folders
have taken on inappropriate properties. Folders containing data files
somehow get setup to display "artist", "song title" and "duration"
rather than things like "size" and "date." After reading your post, I
realize that I need to be more sensitive to how I create and move short
cuts, and perhaps the inappropriate folder properties are a result of
the folder properties being encoded in and carried with the shortcut.
