hey guys, any help would be appreciated.
i have some children who use the same computer as me but my computer
contains somewhat fragile business documents i can't have them messing
up, overwriting, deleting by accident, whatever.
I have made a seperate user account for them but they can still access
the seperate drive the files are located in. the drive is a slave on
the primary ide with Windows XP being run on the master on the primary
ide. is there anyway i can prevent them from accessing the second hard
drive in anyway shape or form?
I don't want them being able to view any files or changing the
permissions so they can view the files.
i'm envisioning a solution where i can tie the hard drive specifically
to my user account and then password my user account. now i've
experimented with permissions and i can set it so the cihldren can't
access the second drive when they're logged on their account and my
account is the only one that can access the drive. the problem with
that is that they can access the drive if they meddle around in the
security tab and set the permissions themselves. you get to the
security tab by right clicking the drive in question, going into
properties and it's on the top.
does anyone know how i can set it to tie the drive directly to my
account with no way to change this unless the account it is tied to
decides to without using third party software? |

Make sure their account is a limited user account. Access to files/folders
in XP is handled by permissions. From Start | Help and Support search on
permissions or see these links.

Interesting...how old are they? )
Here are two suggestions that work but it takes two steps.
Follow each below:
Hide Drives in My Computer
http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/148/
Prevent Access to the Contents of Selected Drives
http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/1157/
Good luck and keep us posted.

Hi Matlaw,
Any of the solutions listed will give you some protection,
to be honest though most of them can be by-passed with a
Linux boot disk.
I handle a lot of sensitive data and realize that for any
real security, you need encryption with a strong password. I
personally use TrueCrypt (FreeWare). This program creates
a 'psuedo' drive that you save your documents to. The
TrueCrypt 'psuedo' drive is simply an encrypted container.
You enter the password and the drive is mounted. During that
session, your access to your data is transparent. When you
log off the drive is dismounted and all that can be seen is
the encrypted container.
I wrote a FreeWare program called PassKey for generating
strong passwords easily. Between the two, you have a very
secure area to store your confidential data.
TrueCrypt can be found at;
http://www.truecrypt.org/
PassKey can be found at;
http://csdcs.tlerma.com/passkey.html

You've gotten a lot of good answers (I like Plato's the best--get them
their own computer), but let me add another suggestion: remove the
drive from the computer entirely and mount it in a USB drive
enclosure; they cost about US$25 and it's extremely easy to mount a
drive in one. Then put the drive somewhere where they can't get to it,
and plug it in only when you are using the computer.
