So how well do you want to be covered? Go read the comparatives at
http://www.av-comparatives.org/. So do you think 90% coverage is good
enough for your comfort or would you like 98%? So how long does all
that *trialware* last that was pre-installed on your pre-built
desktop?

I think you're better off uninstalling McAfee and using AVG.

Hi Blair:

I too have used Mcaffee for years but I intend to switch in Sept when my
current subscription is up. Mcaffee just seems to have become quite
"bloated" and slow.

Thank you! I always used AVG until I had NSW installed and both times it has
totally messed up my computer, even removed my Dragon and screen reader
files (to its own Trash, if you please).

So do I. Stay with what you have used in the past and are familiar with the
features. In addition, I would add the free Windows Defender (Beta 2) (since
it is an active spyware blocker and will also enable you to control startup
programs among other things):

Exactly my solution...but before you remove McAfee

Download and save all the ones you mention above

Disconnect fronm the internet

Uninstall McAfee throught the add/remove folder

Install all the programmes

Reconnect to the Internet

Update all

Worked well for me!!

You may have to check and sort your settings in Outlook Express/Accounts !!

Hello Blair
If you are not a beta tester and you do not have an additional computer to
test on, then stay away from beta products - or expect to have your one and
only computer not working at times.
There are of other antispy progs to choose from, like

Paid for-
Spyware Detector
Spy Sweeper
Spyware Doctor

Free-
Ad-Aware
Spybot search and destroy
Windows Defender

Although the free ones are not as good at detecting/removing spyware and
they do not have the largest of Detection Databases compared to the paid
for, at least two will help to cover each others backs.
MS do not disclose the size of their database - probably explains why its
detection rate is not much better than 68% - but a bit better than Ad-Aware
and Spybot.
Re Defender, it has been mentioned that on first launch, it can be a bit
daunting and confusing if you get bombarded with a number of alerts and
warnings, with no explanation as to what to do next - scan or sort the
warnings?
It is said that prevention is better than cure, and I would say that Spyware
Blaster is very good at doing that.

Same scenario for me.

IMO, McAfee is buggy, intrusive, performance-degrading, and difficult to
uninstall. (Even after uninstalling, I had to use msconfig to stop vestiges
from launching at start-up.)

I ended up using your combination (AVG, Zone Alarm, Spybot and AdAware) and
am generally satisfied.

Windows Defender in it's current version is much improved, but some people
are still having problems with updating the definitions (and engine).

Also, if you're on a network that updates machines through SUS that won't
work. You would have to switch to WSUS.

Nix on MS's Beta Spyware--it missed tons on my new computer. I went back to
AdAware and Spyware Doctor, and run Trendmicro each week in addition. Thank
goodness I got rid of NSW so I can now program my System Tolls to do regular
scans for me. Good ole NSW had that locked up so we had to use "One Button
Check-Up" which snagged up all my Dragon profile files (after 26 hours of
dictating them for "training" Dragon). Ahhh free at last!


I'll bet most of what it missed was cookies, right? It doesn't check
cookies because they are just text files and can't hurt the machine.
