Case # SRX040304603987
I am attempting to install Windows XP Home Edition on my
sisters computer, and the hard drive keeps defaulting
to "H" instead of "C". The "C" drive shows up in the
Removable storage devices. section.
The computer came with Windows XP Home edition
installed on it and "XP" was stored on the hard drive in a
hidden partition. She did not receive a hard copy of 'XP
Home with her computer purchase from V2Premier. The
Product Key was on a printed label affixed to the top of
the computer. The computer's hard drive was corrupted by
a virus causing a need to reformat and reinstall the 'XP
operating system. When trying to access the hidden
partition (which apparently was created with Symantec's
Ghost "gdisk", the recovery disk supplied by V2Premier
could not access the hidden directory which also appeared
to be corrupt. V2Premier would not give us any support
without purchasing an annual maintenance agreement at a
cost of $290, nor would they supply us with the hard copy
of the 'XP (Product Key: CKCPK V8GP9 PY7MH 4D3GF FJVBY)
originally installed and that is stored in the
inaccessible hidden partition.
This forced my sister and her husband to purchase
another copy of 'XP Home edition ( Product Key: GPQ8J
DCVGC XYRPF HQ32R VDRK7 ) and work from there.
Using "fdisk" I deleted and re-partitioned the
drive, formatted and installed the new "XP Home.
Everything was fine, until she installed MSN9 and
contacted the blaster virus before she could download and
re-install her PC-cilling anti virus
After much to-do and consulting with MSN9 support
it was decided to wipe out the drive and start fresh. It
was also recommended that 'XP be installed using an "NTSF"
file system rather than a "FAT" file system as it is being
installed on an 80 Gig Hard drive.
After deleting the partition and assuring the
drive was devoid of all data, the BIOS was set to boot
from CD-rom and 'XP was allowed to partition, format, and
install on the computer. It is at this point we incounter
the problem. After completion of installation XP is
designating the hard drive as "H" and "C" a removable
drive. When trying to access files on the hard drive "H" a
window pops up stating there is no disk in the drive. I
went through this process twice with the same results.
The computer is equipped with a "NIC" (network
interface card) which is disabled in the BIOS also, if
helpful the specs ar as follows:
Intel P4 2.4 gig CPU Lucent 56k
V90/92 modem
PC 2100 DDR 256meg ram Samsung SV8004H 80
gig IDE HD
SIS VGA Display AC97'
audio device
CD-RW drive DVD-R drive
Digital camera interface multi-card reader
Thank you for your attention and any solution you may be
able to contribute to the solution in this matter would be
greatly appreciated
