When ever I click on "My Computer" it takes 30 seconds of watching the
flashflight before I get the list of folders. Looking in the event viewer it
appears every time I do this an entry is generated. Type is ERROR and source
is DCOM. The "server" that did not register with DCOM before timing out was
Microsoft's svchost.exe.
My system info... 2.4GHz CPU, 512MB Memory, XP Home SP2
I've run Ad-Aware, CCleaner and System Mechanic 7. Until an hour ago Norton
Internet Security 2007 was installed on this machine. I've removed it to see
if it was the cause of the problem. This slowdown has been going on for many
months.
Any ideas on how to fix this problem?
Thanks.

I recommend trying out CCleaner to clean registry and unneeded files and
also DEFRAg your HDD under system tools Defrag. Try that out and let us know
how it goes.

Downoad the registry file from line 157 right panel and execute it to fix
your registry.

Brian,
In the event logs what is the Event ID?
Is it 10010 by any chance?
Awaiting your reply,

I have run CCleaner and done a defrag within the last couple of weeks. This
was prior to removing Norton but it had no effect.

Brian,
I advise you never to download registry files from any site unless someone
like Microsoft as you cannot be sure of what they contain if you don't know
the Windows registry. Therefore, it could be harmful & you could possibly
kill your computer
Beside the above none of the tweaks will help you anyway because you have an
error in your event log so Ronaldo was giving you bad information.
Provide the Event ID like I asked for originally & then we can help you.
Awauiting your reply,

And I recommend that, although it's OK to use CCleaner's other functions,
you avoid using it to "clean" the registry.
I strongly recommend *against* the routine use of registry cleaners. Routine
cleaning of the registry isn't needed and
is dangerous. Leave the registry alone and don't use any registry cleaner.
Despite what many people think, and what vendors of registry cleaning
software try to convince you of, having unused registry entries doesn't
really hurt you.
The risk of a serious problem caused by a registry cleaner erroneously
removing an entry you need is far greater than any potential benefit it may
have.

Newbie, I may not be an expert, but I know enough to trust an expert that is
well above your leage.. the sugested registry fix, may not solve the
problem but it cannot cause damage that renders the system useless. You can
cause damage to a registry if you edit a part of the registry that's
involved with a vital part of the system, if it is not, it simply can't.
You should also know that the Kellys-Korner website is run by a well known
MVP and her reg-fixes are not designed to cause damage to the registry. You
are the first person to doubt Kelly Theriot's capabilities so read up and
take notice.
About Windows XP Expert Kelly Theriot
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/meetexperts/theriot.mspx
As for the registry fix, can you say which of these registry value/editions
causes any damage?
Prevent Delay Opening My Computer/Explorer registry edition.
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\stisvc]
"Start"=dword:00000004 ***(this value already exists in the default
registry with a 2 for autostart stsvc relates to the "Windows Image
Acquisition" service, I ignore how it relates to the Windows Explorer but
the google search results seem to point to this service or an image capture
device as the source of the problem)***
[HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoSaveSettings"=dword:00000000 ***(this value is added to Explorer
policies)***
[HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]

registry)***

"NoRemoteRecursiveEvents"=dword:00000001 ***(this edition is added to
the Explorer Policies, the value name explains itself and relates to the
DCOM error)***
As for the DCOM error 10010, read the facts and later tell me if the
registry fix is related or not to the problem as suggested by the search
results.

Brian,
What is the GUID that is causing the error?
Could you just copy/paste the error from the event viewer but remove
computer name?

Yep, Kelly's site has been around for a long-time, and is one of the very
best and most-trusted Windows sites available. Her site has helped many many
thousands of people.
I would trust any of her fixes implicitly. Caution in deciding which sites
to trust and which not to trust is always well-advised, but picking Kelly's
site to warn people about is just silly, and demonstrates to all of us just
how much of a newbie "Newbie Coder" is.

You convinced me to give it a try and boy am I glad you did! I was expecting
to run some sort of script to update my registry but that didn't happen. I
had to go into regedit and manually add / change the entries but the results
are fantastic. When I bring up My Computer it is almost instantaneous.
Thanks to everyone involved in getting this fix!

Brian,
What you need to do is get the information as this doc describes:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/support/ee/transform.aspx?ProdName=Wi...ws%20Op
To follow the document you need to use the registry editor (Click START |
RUN | Type 'regedit' (no quotes) & click OK)
It will show you what application is registered to this GUID.
You can then find this application in Services (START | RUN | services.msc)
& disable that application or in TASK MANAGER
The program vendors 'should' help you from there.
Note:
There are a few conficting pierces of information with this error. Some say
rename the default key, some say delete the affected registry key, some say
rename the default value & some say leave alone.
I wouldn't delete any registry key or rename it intil you have backed it up
first. That way you can be sure you have a backup of it. To backup a key in
registry editor click the REGISTRY menu & export the key
Are waiting for your reply,
