XP and Works? What's the difference?

Well one can really be up to date with Works 7. Current relelase of Works is
8.

Word, Excel, Access etc as you describe are components in Microsoft Office
or Office Professional. Both products with 5 times the value of the
respective Works or Works Suite boxed sets.

One does have the benefit of being able to purchase the Upgrade versions of
Office to install over Works as it is a qualifying product.

To be on the safe side, just as if your suppliers can quote you on the
inclusion of Office and then compare 'apples with apples'.

On another note I'd be very surprised if there was Pds 200 difference in two
'identical' computers. Get the detailed specifications for all components
and see just which one is better. You may find one is using a motherboard
with 'built-in' everything, including AGP [video] to save a little money.

It is a huge benefit to your performance to have a higher specification on
the AGP [Graphics Card]: this will have 32 / 64 / 128 Mb of memory and then
other detailed improvements.

Other issues include the speed of the Front Side Bus [FSB] the higher the
better and the specification of the Memory [RAM] again the higher the better.

Of less importance, but given the way of things today, one really would
benefit by having 4 or more USB sockets [all at USB 2.0]. Just abut
everyhting is USB today, printer, mouse, scanner, Modems [dial-up, ADSL or
Cable], external storage [memory stick, Hard Drives etc], cameras: hence any
more that you get will be of benefit and save you from buying a USB hub and
cluttering the desktop.

Windows XP is just the latest operating system, the software
that makes a computer run.

WORKS is a software application that includes programs that
let you do some useful things, word processing, spreadsheet
and database. WORKS is a very basic and simple set of
programs and it retails for about $50 US. There is a WORKS
SUITE which also includes MS WORD and some other software
and it retails for about $100 US.

MS OFFICE is a powerful bundle of software that does much
more than WORKS and it includes WORD, EXCEL, PowerPoint, and
in various versions, ACCESS.
£200 more for just WORKS 7 (the $50 US basic version) seems
a little too high. You'd be better off buying the less
expensive computer and buying the WORKS or other software in
a separate deal.

If you need the power of the EXCEL and ACCESS programs, you
should buy OFFICE in whatever version you need.

I would doubt the sys are identical with that price differential, unless
possibly yr buying from the high street, even then it may be the warranty
supplied.
But unless you reveal what and who, how can we answer?

I think everyone has answered this question well. I would just like to
add a couple things. Double check that the computer configurations are
the exact same becuase that seems like a lot of money for Microsoft
Works. Windows XP is the OS and does not come with anything but Wordpad
(not Word) and Notepad for text editing. It does not come with a
spreadsheet, database, or presentation program like Office or Works has.

Here is why I really posted a followup:
Instead of purchasing Works or even Office, I would highly recommend you
take a look at OpenOffice.Org and try their Office Suite. I used this
suite all the time before I finally purchased Microsoft Office (for $75
installable on 3 Computers, you just can't pass that up). The great
thing about OpenOffice is it is constantly being changed, upgraded, and
bugs fixed, and it is FREE! You can try it out at www.openoffice.org
