Couldn't find any posts with this problem. I have a Toshiba Tecra, XP sr2.
Machine has only 2 USB ports so bought a Belkin mini-hub, which runs on
generic USB hub driver. With ADSL modem in 1 USB port (it doesn't like the
hub), and mouse + Lexmark X1180 printer/scanner in hub all works fine, except
that _sometimes_ on reboot neither the hub nor connected devices are
recognised. Only solution then is to unplug hub, unplug all devices from
hub, reconnect hub, then reconnect devices one after another. Belkin says it
has nothing to do with them. Toshiba won't answer me at all.

Is it a powered hub?

Is the printer powered by the USB?

Thanks so much for your reply. In answer, yes, the hub is powered. The
Lexmark printer/scanner has its own power supply. The power-saving mode
thing in XP-Pro is turned off (in case you were going to suggest this). I
note now that I am not the firat person to have this problem, (although I
haven't seen the solution posted.)
