I bought an iPaq 4700 about a month ago. I installed some software and some
data. I decided to try the HP security software that came with the machine.
All seemed well.
Then turning on the machine it seemed to freeze, just showing my name and
phone number. I pressed the soft reset button, and was astonished to find
myself presented with the screen for digitizing the screen by pressing the
stylus in the four corners of the screen. All the memory was lost.
No problem thought I, I could just restore from the Microsoft activesync
backup I had made. So I put the machine in its cradle and log in with active
sync as a "guest," and try to restore.
No can do, says active sync. The backup was made with a different kind of
pocket pc! Well, I can't persuade the program that that claim is just a lie!
The backup was made with the very same machine, the only difference being
that the machine is currently an amnesiac.
Anyone know how to persuade active sync to restore the memory contents of a
machine like my 4700 that has lost its memory?

Yes.
I have restored from a Guest partnership, and it works. To restore the
backup to the device, open Tools->Backup/Restore in ActiveSync. Then use
the Change button to navigate to the backup file from your old partnership.
No need to change device ID or partnership name, as restoring the backup
will fix them.
The error message is misleading. It appears not only when the device
is different, but also when some PPC settings are not the same as in the
backup.
Try setting 3 things to what they were when you did the backup:
1. Home time zone
2. Visiting time zone
In the time zones, the PPC looks at both the name and time, so GMT London
is not the same as GMT Casablanca. Also if it was summer time when you
did the backup, then set the date to a summer time date.
3. Settings, system, regional settings
None of these get set during the boot up sequence after a hard reset.
Having done all that, seen how horribly slow restore, and probably got an
bug in your email if you have any non-Active sync accounts, do yourself a
favour and buy Sprite Backup which works much better and faster.

Thank you so much for your most helpful post!
Active sync backup certainly is cluncky in the extreme!

Actually that is how AS "help" tells you to log on. I suppose creating a new
identity (since it won't accept your machine as the old identity) makes it
impossible to restore files.
