Good afternoon all,
I have been reading these groups for the last few weeks trying to figure out
how to get my equipment talking. Here is what I have:
EQUIPEMNT/SOFTWARE
------------------------------
1. Garmin etrex (set to NMEA out @ 4800 baud)
2. Ipaq 1940 / 1945 - nothing connected to com1 (please do not reply saying
that the 1940 / 1945 does not have a serial connection. If you are correct
than I am NOT going to get this to work, I am interested in hearing from
people such as Russ M. and Dale P. who have seen this work [i.e. 1910, 1930
do NOT have serial - 1940 / 1945 does]
3. GPS/PDA cable:
http://www.gpscity.com/gps/brados/0234.2.9484556226515359192/jge-ipaqcig.html
4. Mapopolis
5. visualgpsce
6. tty.exe
CONFIGURATION
---------------------
A. Etrex
- NMEA out
- 4800 baud
B. iPaq 1940 /1945
- Serial out: com 5
- Serial in : com 8
- Dial up networking: disabled
- Bluetooth disabled
B. visualgpsce
- com1
- 4800 baud
C. Mapopolis
i.
- auto detect com port
- auto detect speed
ii.
- com1
- 4800 baud
iii
- com1
- auto detect speed
D. tty.exe
- com 1
- 4800 baud
RESULTS:
-----------
A. tty.exe
- A screen full of +++++
- no log file
- clearing screen has no affect
- Bluetooth light flashes
B. Visualgosce
- "fix not available"
- all screens indicate no communication is happening
- log file empty
- Bluetooth light flashes
C. Mapopolis
i. When in auto detect mode (re: com port auto detect)
- Checks com1, com3, bluetooth manager pops up (even though disabled) - I
cancel, checks com9, then back to com1 and so on
- Bluetooth light flashes
ii. When com1 is specified
- Checks com1 forever
- Bluetooth light flashes
If anyone out there has experience with this iPaq model and serial GPS
connection please contact me. I would really appreciate the help.
Thank you,
Jon

I also just found the following:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\Active\07
Key = Drivers\Builtin\Ser2410
Name = com1
This indicates to me that the iPaq 1940 / 1945 is using a serial connection
driver on com1.

I believe 19xx does not have serial cable support. You better check if the
GPS lists 19xx is a supported device. If it is then you should consult with
HP regarding this matter. I'm looking into serial/SD I/O development and
find that HP dev hardly provides any support in that area. At least not on
the 19xx.

I would suggest you ask the experts in the web based forum at
www.pocketnavigation.com - they deal all day long with these type
questions.
You HAVE TO see something like this using the terminal emulator:
$GPRMB,A,,,,,,,,,,,,A,A*0B
$GPGGA,113408,4837.4624,N,00903.3936,E,1,05,2.3,474.3,M,48.0,M,,*48
$GPGLL,4837.4624,N,00903.3936,E,113408,A,A*41
$GPBOD,,T,,M,,*47
$GPBWC,113408,,,,,,T,,M,,N,,A*74
$GPVTG,0.0,T,359.2,M,0.0,N,0.0,K*43
$GPXTE,A,A,,,N,A*51
$PGRME,9.0,M,9.3,M,13.0,M*1F
$PGRMZ,1541,f*35
$PGRMM,WGS 84*06
$HCHDG,,,,0.8,E*0F
$GPRMC,113410,A,4837.4621,N,00903.3936,E,0.0,0.0,231203,0.8,E,A*18
This block will repeat over and over again every 2 seconds. Using your
other tools, they may or may not be able to interpret this as long as
you don't have a fix on the GPS since the GPS output is different with
and without fix.
So, before trying anything else, get this to work. Maybe yor cable is
broken after all! Do you have a cable to connect the GPS to the
computer to verify this output? You would then at least know the GPS
is ok. Can you then try to repeat the exercise on the Ipaq, or on
someone else's Ipaq with your cable and/or with the other person's
cable?

Someone apparently didn't read #2 under 'EQUIPEMNT/SOFTWARE'.

Excellent idea,
I will take all of your suggestions. Thank you for the sample of the
terminal output (I wasn't sure what I was looking for).
I will report back with my findings.
Thanks again!
Cheers,

Are you sure that they have serial ports? I'll be interested to know
if someone can confirm/prove it.
I am pretty sure they do not.
Yes of course they do have serial ports, if you count IR and BT.
We say serial port usually imply a serial port through the bottom
connector.
You have tried and could not make it work indicates that it DOES NOT
have a serial port.
BT GPS is the only way for 194x. (I discount IR though it is possible)

The H19xx does have serial port circuitry but unfortunately it is terminated
in an IR port rather than a connector where you can get to the RS232
signals.
I'm using my H1910 with an RS232 GPS receiver and Mapopolis through the IR
connector using this serial-to-IR converter:
http://home.tiscali.nl/~t_aalberts/GPS_IRDA_DIY_PAGES.htm
Good luck!

My iPaq 1935 has exactly the same registry entry. PHM Device
Manager also lists several serial devices as active under the
Ports (COM) section, including "S2410 COM0 (COM1:)," "Serial on
USB (COM9:)," and "Unknown Serial Device (COM3:)."
The "S240COM0 (COM1:)" device uses the same device driver as the
IR port -- listed as "S2410 IRDA2410 (COM2:) " -- which you
already identified as SER2410.dll.
I have no idea what this means.

Jon, I know you don't want to hear this but the 1940/1945 does NOT have a
functioning serial port to achieve what you are looking for. Unless it's HP
themselves selling an accessory serial cable then anyone else advertising
such a cable is confused and or taking your money under false pretensions.
Bluetooth GPS or the project to connect a serial GPS via the iR interface
are your only options apart from getting a different unit.

Thanks for replying Darren,
I had read lots of posts supporting what you are saying. But also read
these 2 posts:
http://www.ppczone.net/forum/showthread/t-8696.html
http://www.ppczone.net/forum/showthread/t-8884.html
I have not been able to get in touch with Russ, but Dale has answered a
couple of my e-mails and he seems very knowledgable. He doesn't seem like
the sort of person who would say "While the 1910 does not have a serial port
the 1940/5 does have one and
others have made this work using the same connections as a 38xx/39xx
connector". If you check out his home page and see his knowledge/experience
with GPS and PDA/GPS I think you will agree.
Having said all that - I am still not up and running So I am
faced with the very real possibility that you are 100% correct!
I guess in my mind I am hoping to answered the ipaq 1940 serial vs. no
serial debate.......to bad it might cost me some cash to prove it to
myself!! Doh!
I will still try and contact Russ and try a few tricks but - I am losing
faith though!
Thanks again everyone.
Jon

Interesting links, I can't even recall posting to one of those threads! I
still stand by my statement that the 1940/45 doesn't have this facility. I
don't know whether the posters claiming success are confused about models
and am more than happy to admit I'm wrong if I see evidence to the contrary
but I've yet to see any firm proof aside from hearsay and secondhand claims
to the contrary. |

You did not. That was just an archive of other newsgroup like google.
I did come across that link some time ago but common sense told me not
to think much about it.
As there must be many other 194x owners out there (most may not have
tried with the knowledge that it does not have a serial port)who have
tried. There had been no other report of success.
Of course the easiest to find out is to get hold of a 194x and try but
I do not have access to one at the moment and it does not justify to
buy one just for that.
WE did get a 1910 in the early days to explore the possibility of
making a serial interface for it but the finding was conclusive: the
serial port hardware is not present (or connected).
I would not exclude the possibility that 194x is different. I recalled
someone saying that the serial port is present in device manager (do
not confuse with USB/BT/IR serial ports) then it is a possibility.
