Post subject: iPAQ 1940 Rom
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>pocketpc (more info?)

Yesterday my iPaqs bluetooth icon disappeared from the bottom eight hand
corner. Then clicking Settings on the Start Menu caused the PPC to lock up.

No amount of soft or hard resetting would bring it back so after looking
round on NGs it seemed that my ROM had been corrupted.

So I'm sending it back to be repaired since its in warrantee. BUT what
happens when its out of warrantee... how many other people have had corrupt
ROMs? What I'd like is to find a ROM image for my 1940 so in the future I
could just re-flash it myself. If no-one knows of a resource (unofficial I
imagine) for a ROM then is there any software available that will make a
copy of a ROM from the device itself?

Out of warrantee I'd prefer not to have to pay to get my device re-flashed
when/if this happens again.

I was one of the earlier ones that had this problem. When I called HP to
troubleshoot the problem, they said that it sounded like the ROM was
corrupt. Since then, there have been posts in this group that explain a fix.
You'll have to search for the posts, but I think it just involves copying a
file back over to the iPAQ.

If yours is acting like mine did, then you didn't get all the way through
the hard reset. The progress indicator just keeps spinning, but if you soft
reset you'll eventually get back to an error window that does nothing if you
tap 'OK' because screen needs to be aligned. If you tap on the screen long
enough to find the right spot, you can get rid of the window. Then you have
to play the same game to tap Start-Settings-System-Screen-Align Screen.
After that, you'll be back to a semi-functional unit. At that point, I was
still screwed and ended up returning it to the store. But, if you can apply
the fix from the other posts you should be alright.

What software did you have loaded? I've heard some speculation this might be
caused by a program improperly uninstalling itself. I had uninstalled a
couple programs shortly before I noticed the problem (Resco File Explorer
and Raven Scientific Calculator).

I know from an older 3630 iPAQ that ROM updates offered by
Compaq/HP usually have an option to backup and restore ROM
images before doing an actual ROM upgrade with the flash program.
I've also heard that a PPC has basic functions built in for 'serial'
communication so as to accept incoming ROM flashing through
that method of communication, by pressing a sequence of buttons.
I've seen that information in this newsgroup somewhere too...
a search of this group might get some useful information indeed.

I don't think there is a ROM upgrade though. Or am I missing something?

No there's no upgrade. As soon as there is one it'll be good but I've heared
nothing about one comming soon although I think the 2210 had one recently?
The shop I bought it from says that after 30 days HP have to deal with the
claim so they're collecting it on Monday.

I requested a new unit in case the memory is mine is faulty (to stop it
happening again) but was basically told that if it works after being
re-flashed then that's all they'll do. I can see this happening again on the
first day the warrantee runs out!

Then, if that doesn't work, they have the option to rebuild it. You don't
even know that you are getting your original unit back. They determine that
yours is bad and then they send you one that was rebuilt earlier to reduce
the turnaround time. It seems to be a common practice. Palm did it to me
too.

Do you feel this to be a good thing, or a bad thing?

When it happened with my Palm M500, the rebuild was trash within a year. I
didn't take the Chance with the iPAQ and bought the extended warrany at the
store. So I was only down the two days that it took me realize that I wasn't
going to be able to correct the problem. If you go with HP repair, you have
to add days to mail the packaging and then the unit back and forth. I get
the felling that they turn it on to verify it doesn't work and then
automatically send out the rebuild to make the process flow a little faster.

I'd rather pay a little more and get a better quality product. But, if they
'waste' the time to catch all the problems, I'd be paying a little more for
a high quality, out of date product. To me getting the extended warranty is
the best bet.

Well if the serial number on the unit changes then I'll know! If I get
someone elses device then I may get a screen thats more scratched than mine,
or a bad battery or something. Surely they're not ALLOWED to do that are
they? Under UK law I think they have the choice to repair it or replace it
with a new one. Not replace it with a secondhand one!
