Post subject: Anyone have a good Encyclopedia's for Windows Mobile 5?
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>pocketpc (more info?)

Hey out there, I am looking for a good Encyclopedia to put on my
Windows Mobile 5 device. What I would really like is a downloadable
version of Wikipedia, maybe even with the possiblity of making changes
then uploading them later.
Please let me know.

Do a web search for wikipedia and TomeRaider.
For some reason it's only available on the TomeRaider reader, which is
quite expensive at $38 (IIRC).
As for the Wikipedia itself, you can download the text-only version for
free (approx 1GB), or get a year-old edition with graphics on DVD for
$25 (approx 2 or 4GB depending on graphics quality) (again IIRC).

Also, there's LexiPedia and MDict. I've just cross-posted updates on both
databases to both my blog and several Pocket PC forums.

I guess there is no way to have a fully copy with downloadable
updates. I have Encarta which is pretty extensive but there are no
attachments for Pocket PC. I can think of a few things I could do
with an Encarta database to a Pocket PC but no one seems interested.
A database that could be loaded a lot faster onto a PPC from the
Desktop, no downloading. You wouldn't need the entire database, just
whatever the person was searching for and a specfied memory cap.

You can have a full copy of Wiki - after all, dumps are continuously
updated, and the images can be fetched too and there're converter scripts to
convert the stuff into either MDict or TR. It's just that very few people
work on updating these databases with a constant lack of time.

My impression from the web page of the guy that sells the DVDs is that
the scripts would require substantial updating, and that it still
requires a lot of labor to build it yourself, which is why he hasn't
done it in over a year. Though I haven't delved in enough to know what
the specific issues are.

I decided to settle for the text-only version, but it hadn't occured to
me that equations are "images," so we're not just talking about pretty
pictures.

Does anyone know what the size is of the entire Wiki- database with
the pretty pictures and cross-reference? Eventually I'd like to get
the DVD and be able to download updates on occasion but I don't know
where to be able to download those updates and while I am certain it
would fit on my desktop, perhaps even be portable on my laptop, having
it on the PPC would still be cool.

With pics, 4G and it's only available offline (on DVD's) - only the
picture-less version is available for download
