My ipaq5550 will not anymore work with pass-through in the cradle.

HP cannot help but have advised a hard reset. I went through this
before to fix the undeletable catagories problem but then I decided
to reinstall everything manually.

If I decide to restore from the SD backup (used the WM2003 supplied
backup program) what are the risks to

(a) not being able to restore
(b) corrupt restoration
(c) need I restore the registry

As with anything, there's always a risk. But I've done several
restores on my various PDA's, both with 2002 and 2003, and in those
countless examples, I've never had an issue.

My normal pattern of behavior is to do a backup of the device using
activestink to my tablet PC it has the partnership with. Then I take
the SD or CF card and using my built in card readers, copy the entire
directory structure to folders on the tablet where I save my backup
files. That way I can restore not only the device (which is all
activesync backs up, not memory cards) but also my cards can be copied
over manually.

I've also played with sprite's pocket backup, but never did a restore
with it yet.

I haven't tried a restore with the new onboard backup utility in 2003,
so I can't attest to that particular program's worthiness.

I think the biggest risk to the restore is that you will restore the
problem. Yes you need to restore the registry. That is where all the
information on how everything is configure is kept. Without it, your PPC
would not know what programs you have installed, where they are, or what
setting changes you have made.
