As with anything, there's always a risk. But I've done several
restores on my various PDA's, both with 2002 and 2003, and in those
countless examples, I've never had an issue.
My normal pattern of behavior is to do a backup of the device using
activestink to my tablet PC it has the partnership with. Then I take
the SD or CF card and using my built in card readers, copy the entire
directory structure to folders on the tablet where I save my backup
files. That way I can restore not only the device (which is all
activesync backs up, not memory cards) but also my cards can be copied
over manually.
I've also played with sprite's pocket backup, but never did a restore
with it yet.
I haven't tried a restore with the new onboard backup utility in 2003,
so I can't attest to that particular program's worthiness.
