Post subject: ActiveSync error 85010014 yet again! Any suggestions?
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>pocketpc>activesync (more info?)

Can anyone help me! I’ve spent a whole week trying to fix this extremely
frustrating problem with no success!

I’m using a laptop connected to the internet from a wireless router on a
home network. I have Outlook 2003 with POP3 e-mail accounts running under
Windows XP Professional SP2.

I upgraded the ROM on my Pocket PC phone from WM 2003 SE to WM5. Using the
Pocket PC in its cradle connected to my laptop via USB, sync of Outlook data
to and from my laptop and using ActiveSync 4.1 worked perfectly with my old
WM 2003 setup. Now after the ROM upgrade to WM 5, only files, Notes and
favorites sync over to the Pocket PC. No appointments, contacts or emails
sync over. However, "Explore the Pocket PC" works fine. With the ActiveSync
dialogue box open, if I click on "view status", I get the error message.
"ActiveSync encountered a problem on the desktop: Support code 85010014".
ActiveSync of Outlook from my

Because it is essential to me to have my desktop Outlook data on my Pocket
PC, I have spent many hours searching the web and I see a large number of
posts describing the same problem. So it seems to me that this is a very
common problem! Some but not all folks seem to get it to work after
deleting/re-installing Outlook or deleting and creating a new partnership but
I have had no success. I just seem to be going around in circles. Support
code 85010014 is said to be a server error I believe?

Interestingly, ActiveSync works OK for me on my desktop in my network. This
has an Ethernet connection to the router. However, my desktop is not my
primary computer.

I have tried the following on my wireless laptop with no success:-

Soft and hard resets of the Pocket PC
Scanned my Outlook pst file for errors using scanpst.exe
Completely unisntalled Outlook and re-installed it
Tried with a new Outlook .pst file
Uninstalled AS 4.1 and re-installed it
Deleted the partnership and created a new one
Tried with macros on and off in Outlook
Uninstalled the news reader client (IntraVnews) I have as a plugin on Outlook
Disabled the Windows firewall
Disabled my Kaspersky anti – virus software

Below are relevant sites - computer experts (I’m not one) might recognise
something in there which I need to do to get a fix to make ActiveSync sync
all my Outlook data over:-

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/help/activesync/default.mspx

http://www.pocketpcfaq.com/faqs/activesync/syncerrors.htm

http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-56146.html

(Towards the bottom of the above web page, the poster "Duglaw" has a
transcript of a MS support person who took control of his PC and fixed the
problem - I made the registry changes mentioned in the transcript but again
no luck).

Below is my wcesmgr.log file from one of my unsuccessful sync attempts. Can
anyone tell from this log what my problem is? The first mention of "error" in
is in the line that has "Error Partner" a couple of lines up from the bottom.
Note I didn't tick all the Outlook item options in ActiveSync dialogue box. I
just ticked one or two of them.

Try uninstalling the antivirus program and see if that helps. Also, if
you can, try setting up a new Windows user, log in, and try to
synchronize and see if you can get anywhere.

Rob
I appreciate the sugguestions. Thanks very much. Unfortunately, neither
worked so it's back to the drawing board.

I think I've now reached the point where regrettably, I've given up trying
to make ActiveSync work without that darn 85010014 error and I'm looking into
outside software like Intellisync and XTNDConnect PC. I've installed a trial
of Intellisync handheld edition and whilst it needs ActiveSync to be
installed to make it function, it flawlessly synchronised over all items from
my laptop Outlook to my Pocket PC. It doesn't handle files and favorites
however, but my ActiveSync works for those (as well as my Outlook Notes for
some reason). The only negative for Intellisync is that it won't synchronise
e-mail Personal Folders whereas ActiveSync does of course. I'm researching
XTNDConnect PC as well and then I'll decide which one to go for. The only
problem is I'll have to shell out around $60 to buy one of these.

Hello,

I have faced the similar issue and after deep investigation, there are
two ways to have this issue resolved.

1st, is by trying to delete the partnership and create another one
while Outlook is online (connected to Exchange Server) and the device
is in stand by mode once you plug it into the USB/Cradel.

The other way of solving this, if the solution above did not help, was
to uninstall Microsoft Outlook by going to Add or Remove Programs >
Microsoft Office 2003/2002 > Change > Add or Remove Features > Uncheck
Microsoft Outlook > Update.

And then, do the same step above but this time, check Microsoft Outlook
and then update.

In the second step, I highly recommend that you delete the partnership
again and then connect the device and create a new partnership while
the Microsoft Outlook is online (connected to Exchange Server).

If the problem persists, the please let me know.

Otherwise, enjoy your WM5 device.

Regards,
Tareq

Actually, I'm not using Exchange. I'm in a home environment. My laptop
Outlook is connected to the internet through a wireless router and my Outlook
receives e-mails from a couple of POP3 accounts.

As I said in my original posting, I've tried uninstalling and re-installing
Outlook and at the same time uninstalling and re-installing ActiveSync 4.1.
I've also tried deleting the partnership in ActiveSync and re-creating it.
I've tried all the usual reccomendations but with no result.

This is (at least in my case) a real "stubborn" problem which I've found
impossible to resolve.

Are you running any other Outlook COM addi-ins/plugins besides the one
you mentioned (Tools -> Options, Advanced Options button)? If so, can
you try disabling that as well?

Thanks for the suggestion. I was running the Outlook backup manager (a
download from Microsoft). I disabled that. As a follow on to your suggestion,
I also disabled the addins I was running (Windows CE support, Exchange
extensions property pages and Google Desktop search Outlook addin) but I
still get the 85010014 desktop error

Hrmmm... can you try uninstalling the firewall program, rather than
just disabling it?

Is there a facility to uninstall Windows Firewall rather than just turning it
off then? Even if I could, how would I be able to get by without running
Windows firewall?

Sorry - I thought you were running another firewall. Can you post the
contents of the wcesmgr.log file?

Also look at the wceslog.log file for any errors.

I followed your advice and extracted the entry in my wceslog.log file that
corresponds to the time of my wcesmgr.log entry in the first posting at the
top of this thread.

I don't know how to decipher it. Can anyone diagnose it and tell me what's
happening? Here it is:-

ActiveSync is failing to open the Outlook Object Model. There are typically
two common failures here. The first one is if the MAPI.dll was replaced by
an install of another application. The second is a virus blocking program.

Some Anit-Virus software doesn't properly clean it's self after uninstall,
to manually fix this up, please follow the following steps.
a. On the desktop, click Start->Run
b. In the "Run" dialog, type "regedit"
c. This will launch the Windows Registry Editor
d. In the Treeview in the left pane, navigate to the following
registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{0006F03A-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}
i. Once you've opened the CLSID
note if you type "{0006F03A" it should take you to the right entry
e. Expand the GUID node
f. Click on "InprocServer32" under the GUID node
g. You will see a value set in the "Data" field of the "(Default)"
h. This value should guide you to what application has installed the
script blocking. For example, Norton AntiVirus puts in an entry like this:
"C:\\Program Files\\Common Files\\Symantec Shared\\Script
Blocking\\ScrBlock.dll"
i. If the AntiVirus program in question is still
installed, disable Script blocking in that software
j. If the AntiVirus program in question is *not* installed, or the
user cannot figure out how to disable script blocking, delete the entry
i.
Right-click the "(Default)" value name in the right-hand pane
ii. Select
"Delete" from the context menu
iii. This
should leave you with a value "(Default)" where the "Data" is set to "(value
not set)"
k. Press the "Sync" button on the ActiveSync app on the desktop and
it should work now
