mobile 5 compatible doesn't run on my ipaq rx1950...i'm a novice here
and was just looking for an unzip utility and a memory release
utility...it seems no programs actually compatible ...is there a
website out there that has mobile 5 freeware ?
why doesn't any mobile 2003 software run on
5.0 ?? on regular pc's Windows OS, don't most of the older programs
still run?? just a novice here.. |

My Fujitsu-Siemens Loox with WM 5.0 came with [un]zip for free so I haven't
looked. But things I've downloaded seem to run even if there's a warning on
screen that they are "for an older version of the operating system".

You're probably trying to run the installers you downloaded directly
on your ipaq, right? Well don't. Connect your ipaq to your PC, and run
the installer on the PC, the software will install to the device via
activesync. That's the way most windows mobile software is packaged.

However, I've occasionally had luck "unzipping" a desktop installer and
finding the cabs inside. I've used Resco Zipper to pull that off. (It
seems better at handling 'non-standard' archives better than Total
Commander, in my experience.)
It doesn't work for every PPC program, but works sometimes.
It's an old trick I learned a few years ago from a Mac owner who
obviously couldn't use his "PC" to run the Windows executables.

A very small proportion of software is distributed as .cab archives,
those you can execute on your device (make sure you make a copy of the
cab file before executing, as they generally delete themselves after
the install is complete). Unfortunately the chances of you finding
what you want as a cab file are pretty small.
The desktop installers you've been downloading actually contain cab
files, unfortunately as far as I know you need a desktop Windows PC in
order to extract the cab files. If I can take the liberty of pointing
you at Bev Howards page on this, he's got the details there -
http://www.bevhoward.com/bhhpj.htm#Cabs. |

No, usually the cab files will simply be extracted and installed when
tapped in the pocket PC. It's .exe or .msi installers designed for
desktop PCs which can't be run directlty on the device - cab is fine.

Nope - you said " I know you need a desktop Windows PC in
order to extract the cab files", which isn't the case )

Only if you take half the sentence - I said you need a desktop Windows
PC to extract the cab files *from inside the .exe or .msi installers*
( == "desktop installers") which to quote myself "actually contain cab
files" for each architecture |
