Does anyone know how to create PocketStreet maps?

Can I generate a map from a JPEG file?

Thank you.

Typically you would export maps for Pocket Streets from the desktop program Streets & Trips/Auto
Route/MapPoint. If you don't have those programs you can go to the MapPoint site and export maps for
viewing with PIE...

http://mappoint.msn.com/(rgqfoo552245st45nfqcmavh)/home.aspx

....or go to the MS site for selected downloads...

http://www.microsoft.com/mappoint/business/pocket/mapdownload/psmapsearch.aspx

....or buy a copy of Streets & Trips/Auto Route/MapPoint...

Personally I think your better off buying a copy of Streets and Trips and creating custom maps from
that... You can get Streets & Trips 2004, which includes Pocket Streets 2004, for less than $20 from
Sam's Club for example. Other retailers may have similar deals...

You can't create the map from a jpg. It's far more than just an image which
is being magnified/unzoomed. It's a huge amount of data.

You have to have either Streets&Trips or MapPoint. From these programs (or
at least S&T) you lasso the area you want and then click inside for a menu
whicn will allow you to 'export map for pocket streets'.

You can also download maps but have less control over what you get. If you
need one not available online you may be able to post a request and get
someone to generate a map for you. BUT in reading the EULA it looks like MS
was pretty picky about the content. It reads in such a way that apparently
even maps generated are for 'individual use' only. Not sure where this
falls. I've certainly shown little 'find me here' segments printed in
letters sent out to family trying to find their way to my new house.

Terry,
I checked this out directly with Microsoft Legal a few weeks ago as I have
Streets and Trips 2004, MapPoint North America 2004 and MapPoint Europe 2004
and have people asking me for maps all the times.

The maps that you create are not all that different from Word Documents that
you create that already have a template that is built into Word and the same
goes for the maps, they can be freely given out, but not sold or traded for
anything. I wanted to check this for sure with Microsoft and got the same
answer via a Email and also a telephone call.
Sending along a copy of Pocket Streets 2004 to read the maps is of course
not legal.

I think the main legal issue is from the data provider itself, rather than
MS- NavTech. The "individual use only" clause prevents you from using their
map data in any type of commercial application (i.e. printing your own maps
for sale, creating your own map programs etc.)

Tedd, Todd

Thank sfor helping clear that up. I had wondered whether it might be
legitimate to offer a map.

Hi, Terry,

Thanks for the reply.

But how do you create PocketStreet maps of other cities. I
noted that the MS Mappoint CD only has North American and
Canadian cities and a few others.

But some cities do not have any street level maps. How can
I create maps for these cities? Can Streets & Trips do
this?
