First off, I apologize for starting a new thread on the same topic I
previously posted on. I literally tried posting a reply to my thread about
10 times and it didn't go through, but if your reading this then I guess
starting a new one works!
I'll attach the previous problem (and responses) below so that everyone will
know where I'm coming from.
Basically, when I run activesync wirelessly via VPN I can only connect to
ActiveSync as a guest. The VPN allows me into my network, but since
ActiveSync on the Pocket PC is configured to use a computer's name and not
IP address, when I VPN in I have to use Pocket Hosts to correlate the the
name with the appropriate IP address, and this is where I run into my
problem...
I can:
- synchronize wirelessly within my firewalled network when the network
management is set to My ISP / Work and using a VPN connection as long as I
don't have any entries in Pocket Hosts (as soon as I put an entry in Pocket
Hosts I can only connect as guest)
- synchronize wirelessly outside of my firewalled network when the network
management is set to Work / Work without using a VPN connection (since VPN
connections don't seem possible when network management is set to Work /
Work) by putting my cable modem connection IP address into Pocket Hosts and
placing my computer in my router's DMZ
I cannot:
- synchronize wirelessly outside of my firewalled network when the network
management is set to My ISP / Work and when using a VPN connection to get
into my network and Pocket Hosts to correlate my computers name (which has
already established a partnership with my device) with its IP address.
This is literally driving me mad!! I've been reading, researching, and
testing for two days now and am no closer to discovering a solution!!
I've called HP and the technician I spoke with said they are aware of the
problem and the engineers are looking into resolving it, but it was a ways
off...and I'm not even sure he was clear on the problem I was speaking of.
For those interested, here is a portion of my wcesmgr.log file from around
one of the times when I wirelessly tried to synchronize via VPN and Pocket
Hosts:

Initially I was using a Linksys Wireless router (BEFW11S4 V.2) and now I'm
using a Netgear Cable/DSL ProSafe VPN Firewall Router (FVS318) (not actually
utilizing the VPN in the router, but rather one on another XP machine I'm
running inside my network...have also tried running VPN on the machine that
runs ActiveSync) with a Netgear Wireless Access Point (ME102). Am awaiting
arrival of a Netgear Cable/DSL ProSafe VPN Firewall Wireless Router
(FVM318). I thought purchasing a router with built-in VPN capabilities
would help, but from my limited understanding it seems when I run VPN on a
XP box it is PPTP VPN, and the router's VPN is IPSec VPN...which is a lot
harder to set-up and I don't have the time to learn how to use it right now.
Please feel free to email me or post any additional questions you may have
that you need me to answer to help me resolve this problem!! Any help is
greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!!
Marc
Initial Post:
I've been reading through all the applicable newsgroups
(microsoft.public.pocketpc, and the wireless and activesync sub-groups) and
have discovered that I'm not the only one to have problems synchronizing
wirelessly via VPN and ActiveSync and only getting connected as a guest
(where when I sync via IR or USB it works fine).
From some troubleshooting steps, I've determined that (for me at least) it
seems to be the hosts file (whether this information is input directly into
the registry or via Pocket Hosts) that is causing the problem. I am able to
connect via VPN whether I'm on my internal firewalled router network or off
this network (I forwarded port 1723 to the computer I have set up to accept
VPN connections...which is different now than the computer I am attempting
to ActiveSync with).
When I'm within my network and establish a VPN connecton, and there is no
entries in Pocket Hosts, ActiveSync works fine (since I could normally ping
computers by name without a hosts file within my network).
When I'm outside my network and there are no entires in Pocket Hosts and I
establish a VPN connection, but there are no entries in Pocket Hosts, no
ActiveSync connection is made (I'm assuming since the Pocket PC can't see
the named computer)
When I'm inside or outside my network and there is an entry in Pocket Hosts
that links the private IP address of the ActiveSync machine to that
computer's name and I establish a VPN connection, ActiveSync only connects
as a guest.
This is driving me absolutely crazy and it would seem there is some flaws in
ActiveSync. Has anyone spoken to Microsoft about this? Anyone have any
other ideas that I may try to resolve this problem?
Also, for some odd reason, when I VPN in from outside my network, I can ping
all my internal network machines (and if there's a Pocket Hosts entry I can
even ping my ActiveSync machine by name), but can't connect to shares via
File Explorer (even though I should be able to). Any ideas about this??
Any help is greatly appreciated!! Thanks!
By the way, my network connections are set to My ISP / Work, not Work /
Work, since it seems when I set them to Work / Work I can no longer make VPN
connections for some reason.
Response:
Hi,
Does the name of your internal PC have a period in it? If it does then the
VPN assumes it's an internet host and redirects your traffic there.
That's all I can think of right now.
My Response:
Nope...the internal PC that is running activesync has a simple name with no
period, no numbers, and 6 alphabetic characters. |

Hi,
What kind of VPN are you using? The Pocket PC 2002 only supports PPTP from
Microsoft servers. Windows Mobile 2003 adds IPSec to PPTP and works with
more VPNs. Did you try installing vxutil (www.cam.com) to confirm you can
ping by name from the Pocket PC?

Chris,
I have another XP box within my firewalled network set up to accept incoming
PPTP VPN connections, and I have port 1723 forwarded to this machine.
Initially I had the same machine that was running ActiveSync set up to
accept PPTP VPN connections (and had port 1723 forwarded to that machine),
but someone stated that they resolved the problem by moving the VPN Incoming
Connections to another machine. Realistically, it shouldn't make much
difference as far as I can tell. I can make a VPN connection fine, and am
able to ping the machine running ActiveSync (using vxutil) via its name when
I have a Pocket Hosts entry, but still can only connect as a guest. I was
also having some problems accessing shares on my network, but I'll deal with
that problem later (I don't think its related...I think it might just be my
own incompetence).
The thing thats killing me is that I can successfully connect to ActiveSync
via VPN (using Pocket Hosts) from my iPaq H3650 running PPC 2002 (with a
PCMCIA sheath and a PCMCIA Wi-Fi card).
It seems something's wrong with Windows Mobile 2003???
Any other ideas?? Thanks again for all your help!

Obviously, while you are connecting as a guest, you are communicating
with the Pocket PC. For some reason the Pocket PC name is not coming
across the network to your desktop PC. Is there something in the VPN or
firewall that would somehow be filtering out that info?

I had the connecting as Guest problem trying to setup syncing with my laptop
over the network. I couldn't get it resolved until I connected my PPC
directly to the laptop using the usb cable, deleted my partnership and
recreated it. The next time I tried to sync over the Lan, it connected just
fine. I'm not saying this will work in your case, I thought I'd throw it
out there. Sounds like at this point your ready to try anything.

Hi,
2002 only supported PPTP. Did you configure the VPN connection on 2003 to
use PPTP instead of the default of IPSEC?

In my case, I had to actually manually specify a WINS server in the
VPN configuration (Under "Advanced" -> "Servers") to be able to
connect to my PC via ActiveSync over a VPN. After doing that w/ the
network card set to Internet and a Work VPN established I'm able to
sync w/ the PC at work.
I'm able to sync w/ the same PC when at work on a local wireless
network without doing this but it's likely because WINS is served via
the local DHCP server.
I suppose it's possible for the VPN server to supply that information
but I guess in our case it was not (Win2k server accepting PPTP
connections).
This assumes you have a WINS server operating on the work network and
that the PC you are connecting to is listed in the WINS database.
Hope that helps.
