Hi,
This wireless async thing is a real pain.
It can be done, because I've just done it, but it is a black art and
takes will power and endless patience.
I have a Belkin 54g router connected to NTLWorld (UK) via a set top
box.
I have a Toshiba e750 wifi running ppc 2002.
Firstly I make sure I can connect to the internet and download email
(from my ppc).
Then I try to see if I can access my laptop/or main machine (if on) by
using pocket explorer. My laptop is called slim and I goto pocket
explorer and click on the right hand icon at the bottom (or click on
open).
I enter //slim/ and see if I can get to look at the files on my
laptop. I have configured my wifi so that the system recognises the
MAC addresses of my machines and only accepts them, then I don't need
to bother with encryption (which doesn't seem to work on the e750
anyway, well at least I haven't tried it since I first got my ppc and
couldn't get it working with it switched on.)
I also make sure my laptop files are shareable, c drive!.
[Another option if you have internet information server running is to
connect to
http://slim/ (or whatever your machine is called) to see if
you can get your default web page.]
Usually it comes up with an error saying Network path not found, or
network resource cannot be found or you do not have permission to
access the network or some such thing. Then, magically it sometimes
comes up with a message saying connecting to server and hey presto I
can browse the files on my laptop.
It is such a strange thing. One minute I can't connect and then after
closing, opening retrying or resetting it all suddenly works and I'm
in and it is wonderful to be able to browse the different machines on
your network.
Then I try active sync and wish I had just plugged in the cradle and
save myself a load of time, since my network connect drops to 801b
speed and it takes ages.
I'm sure there is some really strange config thing going on, but what
gets me is that one minute it won't work and then without changing
anything it all zings along - go figure, as our American friends say.
