Archived from groups: microsoft>public>pocketpc (more info?)

I am thinking of buying a Dell x50v, but might rethink it if it can't be
upgraded to Windows Mobile 2005. Has there been any talk of the
possibility of upgrading the latest devices to 2005?

When does it come out?

You folks think it might be better to wait fo rit to come out? Heck, I'm
still using a Jornada 548 after all Wink

Thanks,
John

All current generation Pocket PCs use Flash ROMs. So, they all have the
potential of being upgraded. However, it is up to each vendor whether or
not to provide an upgrade path. HP, for example, chose not to provide
any upgrade options to upgrade their Pocket PC 2003 models to 2003
Second Edition.

John,

The lastest rumor I heard was mid-2005. Keep in mind that most if not all
Pocket PCs have a flash ROM built-in so, in theory, they could all be
upgraded. However - and this big - it is up to the individual OEMs to
provide the upgrade if they choose to do so. Not all OEMs will and they are
not required to do so. Most OEMs did not offer an upgrade from WM2003 to
WM2003SE for example.

Regards,

Thanks for the replies. This is what I assumed, but figured that I would
ask. What has Dell done in the past with regard to upgrades? Like I
said I am leaning towards a x50v, but don't want it to be obsolete as
soon as I buy it.

Then you're buying in the wrong field... Wink

That tends to happen more frequent, with less time in between holding
patterns in the tech arena.

I do know what you mean, but sorry, couldn't resist.

Good point Walt. If there is any part of the industry that is truly
disposable, this may be it. Wink

If it's any help, Dell did not provide any WM2003SE updates to their
previous devices. WM2003SE was introduced in the X30 and X50 range, so
Dell users had to purchase a new unit to get the newer OS.

At least during my Palm years, Palm always provided OS upgrades unless that
particular update required hardware only found on the newer device. Too bad
more companies don't follow that policy.

However Dell did offer upgrades for the X5 from PPC2002 to WM2003, and
offered the update to WMP10 for their X30 model. It seemed that the X5
upgrade hinged on the fact that they started selling X5s with WM2003 on
them, and allowed the 'early' adopters to upgrade. With the WM2003SE
release, Dell did not manufacture any of their current PPCs with WM2003SE on
them, they released new devices. (It's debatable whether the X30 is a 'new'
device or an X3 with a zero on it, but they thought it was new). So it may
depend on whether Dell generates new models to support the next OS or if
they intend to just lay the new OS onto existing hardware and sell it,
whether they offer the upgrade to existing owners.

How long ago were your Palm years, Walt? In the last few years, Palm
has not bothered with OS upgrades. Too busy with the new stuff, I
guess.

Good example, I bought my axim x30 624mhz and by the time it arrived the x50
was already on dell's website's homepage (by almost a week), looking all
nice and pretty.
