Post subject: USA maps but how to get in UK
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>pocketpc (more info?)

Streets and Trips 2004 is what I want. (I would like a map of USA to use
with my iPAQ and Navman).

Is there anyhow I can purchase Streets & Trips 2004 in the UK. Every avenue
(excuse pun) I have tried has not worked as Britain will only sell
Autoroute.

My alternative is simple to purchase Autoroute at about £35-£40, get the
included PocketStreets and just download a single USA city. But I want to
use my iPAQ with far more of the USA mapped!

Help.

(or drop me a line to my hotmail address).

Never tried to buy Autoroute from a European web merchant, but have you
tried to buy S&T from a US or Canadian web merchant?

Now, S&T is about the worst choice if you are wanting to use it on a PPC in
conjunction with a GPS. If you are looking for cheap mapping software for
the US, try Delorme's Street Atlas Handheld 2004 USA. Not sure if you can
get that either, but it is not especially expensive. I'd really recommend
springing for Mapopolis. They had no problem selling me European maps, so I
expect they'll not have any problem selling you US ones. One other option
is TomTom, they have products for both sides of the pond, but I think they
are a bit pricey, though I have no real experience with them. Tried some
early US stuff based on the European rave reviews. Wasn't impressed. They
have changed and added a lot to their US offerrings since then.

For some reason, the US versions of any of the mapping products (Streets and
Trips and MapPoint North America 2004) are only sold in the US and the
European Versions (Autoroute and MapPoint Europe 2004) are available only
outside the US. About all you can get in the states is trial versions of the
Europe maps and I think its the same weird setup in Europe.

I believe it is a licensing issue of some sort...

I think your correct on the licensing issue, something to do with the two
companies that supply the data, there was a article about that years ago
when MapPoint 2002 came out.

Just buy AutoRoute from www.amazon.co.uk if you're in the US, and buy S&T from www.amazon.com if you're in the UK. You'll have to
pay for overseas shipping.

So what I have to do is wait til a friend visits USA and ask them to buy for
me, it seems like! Crazy!

Meanwhile I will have a look at Mapolis. (I considered TomTom but (1) don't
want to pay lots as I have NavMan and (2) TT required maps + software to
open the maps with).

Thanks anyway.

I have the same problem as you, but in reverse. I travel to Europe often and
would really like to have the Europe Version of MapPoint 2004, only way I
can get it is to have a friend buy it there and ship it to me or hope I can
find a copy of it when I travel. Seems strange to me.

Hmm never thought of that one. I tried the same with the Microsoft UK
website, but it stopped my when the country codes did not line up correctly.
But will try Amazon.
Thanks !

Unfortunately, due to software licensing, no one as far as I know will sell
S & T 2004 outside the US.

I recently brought it back, and as a result I have an unwanted copy of the
2002 version, which I would be happy to send to you for the price of P & P
if that's any use.

As I say......I tried this. Amazon wont sell the US Streets & Trips to a
UK customer. Amazon UK will only sell Autoroute. Life is not easy!

Gee they sure make it hard to spend your money ! I would think they would
be glad to sell it, but it sounds like its tied up with license rights.

Forgive me if I'm stating the obvious, but since you want Europe and Gem
Gem.... why on earth don't you get together, so to speak, and buy for each
other. It's obviously perfectly legal!
