OK... so I've had my "T" for awhile (was hooked the moment I got the
fold out, life-size ad in the mail).

But about 4 months ago, I found that I could no longer do a "find"
without crashing the machine. (It APPEARS to almost do it and then
softboots itself halfway through the search.)

Palm help was no such thing. They told me to do a complete backup
(which I did) and then hard-reset to wipe all data and start from
scratch.

OK.... so I do this (takes forever-and-a-day) and then try a "find". It
works. Woo hoo. But the moment I restore from backup. Crashing again.

Thus, I know that there's something on the machine that's making it
crash. But how do I find it? I went through ALL of the calendar and
address data to make sure there weren't any funky characters. Are there
apps that are possible culprits?

Thanks for any ideas!

~Jeff

Perhaps it's a third party app causing the problem.
Try just restoring your PIM data. Test "find".
Then go back and add in the third party apps and
data bases, one at a time testing the find app, to
see where the offender is.

It could be an app that you added that has the feature
of being "find" friendly.

I was going to suggest "FindTester" (http://www.flashplug.de), but
it crashes on my T|T, so now I'm looking for a better one myself.
Does anyone know of a good rock-solid program for testing "find"?

However, I can contribute this:
You can get to the culprit faster (than clearing out and re-adding
one at a time) using a binary search:

Copy 1/2 of your programs back, and test.
If crash, remove 1/2 of that set, and retest
If success, add 1/2 of the untested set, and retest.

Even if you have 100 apps, this only requires around 8 tests,
worst case. Yes, you will have to do some record-keeping to work
this, but if you have many apps installed, it's faster.
