The only thing I saw on this was a post from a bargainpda.com forum.

As a previous owner of an E740, I'm extremely wary of Toshiba's power
functions. I'd wake up in the morning to a freshly hard reset device if I
wasn't careful enough to guard against it, and I just don't want to have to
babysit the next one. Is there an internal backup battery, or are they still
relying on a big capacitor (to provide 30 seconds of power) to bridge
battery changes?

hi there, that's a really good question and I'm embarassed to say I didn't
test this aspect of the e800 out and since the time of this review I've
traded "down" to the e400 to try it out and review it so I no longer have
the 800. I'll send an email to our contacts at Toshiba and see if they can
answer this question for us and will also test the e400 to see how it
handles a dead main battery.
I hear your pain in experiencing the problems with the 700 series, there
were quite a few problems there and lack of a backup battery for an
expensive device is silliness.
i'll get back to you.
