When I bought mine there was an insert for a Pharos GPS system...how
would this work with my model though? It only has an SD slot, no
expansion slot....?

Pharos lists two compatible models for the e400:
http://www.pharosgps.com/products/toshiba/c_toshiba_e400.htm.
Next to that, the Toshiba e400 should have a SDIO slot, meaning
it should accept input and output cards as well. You wouldn't
have much room to place your maps in though, if you use the SDIO
slot for your GPS receiver. Next to that, there might be some
compatibility problems, since I'm not aware if the e400 uses the
SDIONow! IO solution that is required by some SD GPS units (like
Sockets).

There are better solutions than Pharos. In your situation you will need a
GPS Mouse that connects via the sync/accessory port. See our site for
reviews of the alternatives.
