I have a couple of questions about the TomTom GPS software, can anyone help?

1. I currently have a NavMan sleeve for my 3950, with the SmartSt software;
will the TomTom software work OK with the NavMan sleeve?

2. Does TomTom allow you to set an area to avoid (eg Traffic jam on
Motorway)? This is something that really lets down SmartSt.

3. When TomTom is registered, is it done using the PPC serial number or
similar? The reason I ask is that sometimes my girlfriend wants to use the
GPS, so if we could install it on two PDAs (Only one would be in use at any
one time as we only have one GPS sleeve) that would be an advantage. Even if
for licensing reasons I had to uninstall from my PDA that would be OK, as
long as it didn't involve a lengthy re-registering process every time.

Thanks in advance,

Paul W.

Of course, that's what we exist for Smile

Sure will, you'll need Navman's Serial Driver
<http://www.navman.com/land/SmartST/updates/SerialDriver_3_1_6.exe> to allow
TTNav2 to talk to the jacket.

Yes, two options here, you can either set a permanent avoid by drawing a box
around an area or when navigating you can tap the screen and tell it to
avoid current road for 'x' miles or avoid road 'x' entirely.

The registration process does tie the software to a unit but........TomTom
allow two concurrent registrations on seperate units, after this a
subsequent registration on a 3rd unit can only be done after 2 weeks have
expired and the 4th after 6 months. Re-installing on the original unit can
be done at any time.

Darren,

Thanks a lot for your prompt response.

Just out of curiosity... is it the case that having 2 concurrent
registrations on seperate units is only legal if only one of them is being
used at any one time? Surely otherwise it would be legal to give away a copy
of the software for a 'donation' which would leave them wide open to piracy?

Thanks again,

Paul W.

Great site BTW - "Premier" is appropriate - after thrashing about everywhere
else, I found the answers I need there. Hence have my SysonChip - since
yours was the only site that had a decent review! One complaint though......
it's impossible to find the sample map (nav software)comparisons by looking
at the site - I stumbled on it when googling - FWIW you ought to put a
blinking light next to the link because that set of pictures and info says
it all......

According to TomTom's Ts&Cs you should use the software on only one unit at
a time. If you ever need to re-install from the media you would only be
able to do so on the last machine that was installed so selling the disc on
at any stage could result in you being unable to re-install after a system
reset once the seller had installed his device.

If you buy the software new then of course you 'could' install on two of
your own devices so long as you don't use them both at the same time. A
backup to CF is sufficient to enable a re-install on the same hardware in
case of a reset but if if you ever replaced your hardware or it was
reapaired and you had sold on the media then you'd be up the creek etc!

Thanks for the heads up on that, I'll raise it as an issue and get it sorted

Cheers Darren,

Looks like that will be just right for me then - 2 devices, one GPS. Looks
like I'll give TomTom a try. Pity they don't do trial versions though, it's
a lot of money to shell out if you end up not liking it!

since we are discussing Tom Tom....

I questioned them on the difference between the US and the EU version - and
the following was their response "...TomTom Navigator USA TomTom Navigator 2
in Europe are the same application today....", so the little light bulb in
the head lights up and says ... ".....today??".

Any idea if Tom Tom is headed in the direction of having incompatible
versions for each side of the pond? We need maps for both to work on the
same ipaq. Hopefully they will also have mapping for the expanded EU fairly
soon.....

Thanks for any input

I have heard nothing to suggest they will be different apps in the future
although they keep their cards very close to their chests!
