All,
I've recently purchased the TomTom software after using NavMan for just over
a year now, but the 'Avoid Area' was just too big a component for it not to
have, and the add-ons for TomTom are also a nice to have.
After trying it out this weekend, I'm a bit dissapointed in its ability to
find addresses/POI's. Am I doing something wrong or does TomTom lack in this
area?
For example: I wanted to go to a friends house in Bristol, so entered
Bristol as the city and searched for the road. Couldn't find it. Seeing as I
knew the way anyway, I kept TomTom on and drove there. Sure enough, it knew
the name of the road when I was on it. Why couldn't TomTom search for it,
did it not think it was in Bristol? Is there not a way to just search for a
road, regardless of the city like in NavMan?
The same problem really for POI's. I wanted to search for a cinema, but it
appears you have to know which POI category it would be in first before
trying to find it - I ended up giving up after a while of trying different
possible POI categories.
Also, why does it need to have a GPS fix, or use your last known location
before searching for POI? It seemed to me that it was only searching up to
100 or so miles away from my location. This also seems to be a bit strange.
I'm sure I'm doing something wrong, but I'd appreciate some help, or some
confirmation if this is in fact how TomTom works. I should also point out
I'm in the UK incase the versions are different.
Thanks in advance,
Paul W. |

Not familiar with NavMan but there are certainly some
screw-ups in the TomTom db.
Yesterday I located an address in Cheadle, Cheshire and
added it to Favourites, where it is now ID'd as Cheadle
Staffs.
If you depart from a route onto minor lanes, it doesn't
seem to define the path in front of you, although it does
offer directions to get back onto the route it wants to
follow.
To be objective, these are single instances of observed
behaviour - whether the behaviour is characteristic of the
system remains to be seen. |

It may be that the road you were searching for is indexed under another
district rather than Bristol. TomTom does have a few glitches in this area.
As you are new to TomTom why not pay us a visit for usage tips and news,
forums etc.

Darren,
I often visit your site, and find it very informative and useful - keep up
the good work.
If it is the case that TomTom thought the road was in another district, is
it the case that you have to guess all the possible districts TT could think
it's in until you find the right one? This sounds like a very poor
implementation of this area of the the software and if you can't find the
place you want to go to it renders the rest of the software completely
useless too!
Any thoughts on my POI question? Is this the same kind of idea??

It is a problem mainly because TeleAtlas chose some rather obscure political
boundaries when indexing Towns and Cities. That's fine if you know the
possibilities but most of us don't. It is one of the things we hope will be
improved in TTNav3. Because TT uses your current location to restrict the
list of possible matches when searching in Navigator mode it relies on a
current fix or last known position. If you try this in 'Map' mode then it
does not do this.
I must admit that I rarely use the supplied POIs except for 'nearest Petrol
Station' or 'Car Park' but it is one of the issues we have raised with
TomTom for improvement in future releases.

Cheers Darren, I just need to know it wasn't just me doing something wrong.
I'll try the POI in Map mode.
Any ideas when TTNav3 will be released, and if they're likely to have an
upgrade route?
