Archived from groups: microsoft>public>pocketpc (more info?)

I use a symbol Wi-Fi card in my Axim X5 and it works great. Tried it
in a CF-PCMCIA adapter in my laptop but it isn't detected. The laptop
does not support Cardbus devices, just PCMCIA cards. Is that why it
isn't detected or is it the fact that the adapter is for my IBM
microdrive. The microdrive works fine in the adapter on the laptop.

Any help much appreciated.

You will have to go to the Symbol site and download the win9x or winxp
"Spectrum" drivers for the pc... don't know if drivers were released for XP.

Hard to find, but there is info about this on the symbol site.

Thanks for the reply, Beverly.

I failed to mention that I did this, using the Symbol drivers for
laptops. Didn't help. I didn't get any indication that the card had
been inserted, let alone being asked for driver info. That's why I
suspect it's got something to do with Cardbus not being supported on
this laptop. A USB2 "Cardbus" card behaves the same way, i.e. not
detected upon insertion. "PCMCIA" cards work fine. Cardbus cards are
32-bit verses 16-bit for PCMCIA, I think.

>> Cardbus not being supported <<

well... the ppc's don't support cardbus either, so I would go back to
the specifics on the drivers...

can you post;

exactly what you downloaded?

where you downloaded it from?

What does the device manager report with the card in place?

which laptop?

which laptop os?

Thanks for your reply, Beverly. I downloaded and installed...

"Notebook PC Drivers and Utilities for Wireless Networker CompactFlash
and LA-4121 PC Card Formats"

obtained from the Symbol site...

http://www.symbol.com/services/downloads/documentation_drivers.html#doc

and am using a Panasonic CF-61 laptop running Windows98 (1st ed.).

Hmmm. Just noticed "Supported operating systems are Windows 98 2nd
Ed., ME, 2K and XP." in the description of this driver so perhaps
that's my problem. I'll update to Win98SE and see if it makes any
difference.

Device Manager reports under
A) PCMCIA socket:
1) PCIC or compatible PCMCIA controller
2) PCMCIA Card Services

B) Network Adapters
1) D-Link DE650 Ethernet Card PCMCIA
2) Dial-up Adapter
3) Infrared PnP Serial Port

PC Card Properties in Systray lists
1) Empty - socket 1
2) D-Link DE60 Ethernet Card PCMCIA - socket 2

I'll report back if the upgarde to WIn98SE changes anything.

Cheers,
Larry

==============

Uninstalled Mobile Companion then re-installed it. When I get to the
point where it says to insert the WLAN PC Card, nothing is detected
and after a minute or so I get "If PC Card is not inserted, do so now"
or words to that effect. It was and I removed and re-inserted it.
Still doesn't recognize it. After another minute or so I get "Setup
completed. However, when I check PC Card Properties in systray, Socket
1 is still shown as empty. Device Manager is unchanged from above.

I have ActiveSync 3.7 installed and am having issues getting into AS
File\ Connection Settings. I keep getting the Get Connected page. I
don't know if that problem is related or not but I'm going to
uninstall then re-install AS 3.7 and see if that affects either
problem. I'll report back after doing so.

From this point, would suggest sending a copy of these postings to the
Symbol tech support or calling them.

Hope this helps...
