I recently had to wipe out & re-install the OS & programs on a
computer for someone who had a Palm 5, but told me they didn't use.
Now, 3 days later, they are calling me & saying that when they turned
the palm on, it went through the motions like it was being set up for
the first time (tap here, etc....).
I am assuming that they were using it & let the battery die, losing
whatever they had in it.
I did clone the drive just in case they missed something (like this),
so I probably have whatever was on the computer from the last hotsync.
My question is, can I reload palm software on computer & copy files
from old computer to a specific location & re-synch?
Thanks- |

The Palm makes a backup of its data during every hotsynch so you
certainly could do that. The location of the backup data depends on
what operating system the computer you are synching to uses. Windows
Vista for example, uses a folder under your Documents folder. Windows
XP uses a directory under the Palm or PalmOne folder in your Program
Files folder. I'm not sure about where this data would be stored on
other OSes. But under most Windows versions, the folder you should
look for will usually have the same (or almost the same) name as your
Hotsync ID, the name that you gave to your Palm device when you first
set it up. This is your user folder and it should contain all the data
you need to resynch your Palm device.
The PIM applications (Datebook, Address, Memopad, and Todo) all have
their own folders underneath the user folder to which their data is
backed up. You'll have to install the Palm software on your new
computer and use it to import this data for each of the PIM apps.
Underneath the user folder you will also find a Backup folder which
will contain all your third party applications and data which can be
synched to your PDA again. You can just double click on these files
and the Palm Install tool will launch and prepare them to be
hotsynched. Once you've done all this, you can create a new Hotsync ID
for your Palm and hotsynch it to your new computer.

Actually, I still had a clone of the old HD.
If I boot computer from that, synch, install palm on new computer &
then synch back, will device's info overwrite what's on new computer? |

I booted off of the old HD, opened Palm & exported to a .dba file.
I installed Palm OS on new computer, imported & got a message
something like '344 records imported, but might net be displayed in
the current view, and I couldn't see any records in the palm window.
I am synching right now, it's taking a loooooong time & can only
assume that it's working?
Since I do have the .dba file, I should be able to get my info out of
it somehow, right? |

The hot synch manager program has a Custom... menu item (menu reached by
right clicking on the systray icon) which allows you to choose how each app
is synched (i.e. Desktop overwrites Palm, Palm overwrites Desktop, Synch
both, Do Nothing). Use one of the first two, as required, to assure that
the synchs go the way you want them to. (And keep copies of everything until
you are sure it works right).
