Post subject: Problem upgrading iPAQ 5450 to Windows Mobile 2003 Archived from groups: microsoft>public>pocketpc>activesync (more info?)

Hi,
I'm having trouble upgrading my iPAQ 5450 to the 2003 version. I run the
install file (WWE_SP_2_00_21a.exe) from the CD, and go through all the
steps, including
* Performing a normal reset
* Connecting the iPAQ to the PC with USB and to AC
* Establishing an ActiveSync connection
* Disabling standby/hibernation on the host PC
When I click Next in the screen with the above points, I get a message
saying "Verifying the information on your iPAQ Pocket PC... Please wait",
then I get the ActiveSync disconnect sound and ActiveSync (wcescomm.exe and
wcesmgr.exe) is unloaded from memory. And then - nothing. It looks like the
process RUU.exe started by the install file hangs.
I'm using ActiveSync 3.7.1 and the iPAQ connects flawlessly. The HP ROM
Upgrade Utility is versjon 2.10. The current ROM version of the iPAQ is
1.10.00 ENG
* I have tried this on two separate computers
* I have performed a hard reset of the iPAQ
* I have tried using a guest partnership and a normal partnership
* I have removed all password locking from the iPAQ
The result is always exactly the same as described above.
Any help will be highly appreciated!

I would contact HP - the upgrade program has nothing to do with
ActiveSync. However, try booting your computer into safe mode and try
the install from there.

I am having the EXACT same problem.
ActiveSync may have nothing to do with the upgrade program, but the
upgrade directs you to establish an ActiveSync connection as one of
the steps in the upgrade... Rebooting to safe mode was a no go for me
as I couldn't get ActiveSync to connect while in Safe mode. I've also
tried doing a hard reset of my iPaq and deleting all existing
partnerships. Nothing has made any difference... |

It kills ActiveSync prior to performing the upgrade. Microsoft and
ActiveSync have nothing to do with the upgrade program - it's up to
the manufacturer to fix any flaws in their upgrade process and
programs, as they make them - Microsoft has nothing to do with the
programs used to perform the upgrade either.
The only reason I can think of for ActiveSync having to be there is to
ensure that the USB driver is installed... either that, or to send the
initial "enter upgrade mode" flag to the device prior to killing
ActiveSync.

Hi again..... i found the solution to this problem.
It seems to be Microsoft's activesync where the problem lies,
but only in version 3.7.1. so thefore downgrade your version
to 3.7. instead and things WILL work for you.
I dont know what causes it or if microsoft is to blame for this,
but anyway.... no more problems.
