Archived from groups: comp>sys>palmtops>pilot (more info?)

My Palm Zire 72 (about 1 year old) battery might have died or the
charger might have malfunctioned.
The charger connector got bent so I had to buy a new connector and
splice the wires back together. The charger then was able to charge
the Palm for several months. Yesterday the Pilot green charge/power
light would not come on (indicating a charge). I tested the charger
with a volt meter and there seems to be the proper voltage going to the
Palm.
Is there any way of determining what the problem is (it could be one of
the following three)?
1. The battery is bad and won't take a charge
2. The charger connection is bad and won't allow a current to the Palm
to charge the battery
3. The charger is not supplying the proper current to the Palm to
charge the battery
I know that I could get a new charger and see if the battery charges -
but if the battery is bad, a new charger would be a waste of money. I
will see if I can borrow a charger to do the test, but in the meanwhile
does anyone, have any advice on how to test what is the problem.

Thanks, Rick

Use the USB cable to charge the Zire. Leave it on overnight because it
charges slowly through USB.

The other end has to be connected to a running PC or a powered hub.

The battery should charge slowly through the USB cable. You could look
for disassembly instructions at pdaparts.com, take the Palm apart and
apply a voltmeter directly to the battery.

A cell phone charger with the right size connector (easy to spot through the
sales package) will work with the Z72 (and the Tungsten E). Sometimes the shaft
on the connector looks too short but if you look close there is a removable
washer at the base and once removed it will fit the Z72 like the original
charger. I got mine at Target for US$10. A cheap fix if that turns out to be
your problem.

Post subject: Inexpensive E bay Palm Zire 72 Battery Chargers - Quality [Login to view extended thread Info.]
Archived from groups: per prev. post (more info?)

I found out that my charger was only putting out 1 volt and thus the
charger was bad. I will now get a new charger.
Question: Has anyone used the inexpensive chargers that are for sale
on E-bay for $2.00 to $6.00 or so plus shipping? How can they be so
low in cost and be good quality when the Palm ones cost $20 - $30. The
sellers all have good reseller ratings.
Thanks for the responses to my original messages.

I bought a number of inexpensive TX chargers on amazon.com and they work
perfectly. BTW, on amazon.com, shipping was free, I think. /PaulN
