Hello,
I am wanting to buy a Palm but I don't know which. If somebody can help
myself, I thank.
I need Palm that allows programming in Basic and maybe in Pascal,
photographic camera and great autonomy of batteries. It will be used for
complex calculations during autonomous flight.
TIA

Any Palm can be programmed. You need to purchase or download the
software, which probably would include the developer's kit from
palmsource.com. By "autonomous flight", do you mean some sort of
robotic aircraft controlled by the Palm?

Programming ON the Palm itself, or in those languages targeted TO the Palm?

Excellent Basic compiler:
NSBasic (I'm using it now) work on your PC, sync onto your Palm:
http://www.nsbasic.com/palm/info/ide.html

Also CASL, sort of a Pascal/Basic hybred. PC -> Palm again:
http://www.caslsoft.com/
(Full disclosure: I did some work for the CASL folks)

I've used both of the above.

There's a Pascal that you work on your Palm itself:
http://ppcompiler.free.fr/PP.php?lng=en

I haven't used this one.

The Zire 71 has a 640 X 480 camera (I've got one of these) and the newer Zire 72
has a higher resolution (don't recall what, offhand) camera and will take movies
as well, if I'm recalling correctly.

Do you mean "lasts a long time" ? The Palms traditionally gain long battery
life by shutting down when not in use. If used continuously they run a few
hours at best. I drained my '71 from full to about 1/2 in about two hours
listening to MP3's with it almost continuously, for example.

Again, what do you mean by "autonomous"? There are ways to supply power
externally.

Zire 72 has a camera, but I doubt there are compilers for Pascal or Basic. I
know it can run Java apps.

Hi Alan,

Actually there are compiler both for Pascal and BASIC.

Pascal Compiler at; http://pages.total.net/~hkonstas/pp.html

BASIC Compiler at; http://www.aldweb.com/articles.php?lng=en&pg=5350

I have been playing with iziBASIC for a while now and it is maturing
very rapidly. I would strongly recommend it to people who want to do
BASIC programming on their Palm (it does support OS5).

Freeware Pascal compiler: http://ppcompiler.free.fr/?lng=en

Comes with an integrated development environment, seems to work very
well, and there's quite a lot of support for it on the web.

There are also various Basic interpreters.
