I've just bought a new WM 6 device, an HTC Touch Pro 2. This is to
replace my ancient iPAQ 2210/2215, but I want to keep both running
until I am confident I have everything working.
But I can't get the HTC to make a connection. Presumably it's because
AS 4.5 still thinks it should be syncing with my 2210. I thought I
would get prompted by a wizard to setup the new connection, but that
hasn't happened. In a nutshell, I'm lost! Can anyone help me out
please?

ActiveSync should allow you to sync with two devices, though not at the same
time. You'd have to disconnect device #1 to get device #2 recognized.

Thanks Paul, appreciate your help here.
I did in fact disconnect the 2210. But when ActiveSync started it
still showed the name of that device ('Pocket_PC'). In a sense, that's
quite logical, because that's the device it's been talking to for
years! But what *should* happen on connecting a new WM device please?
Should AS automatically start some recognition procedure or what? Can
I force that in some way? Hopefully without having to uninstall all
traces of the old device, because I'd hate to lose both.
Failing getting AS working, is there any other way to get a few of my
key PPC programs installed?

You might want to change the name via the About Control Panel applet (the
Device ID tab, at least on my old WM5 device), before connecting the new
device to the PC. When ActiveSync pops up, it should ask you if you want to
establish a new partnership (or use the device as a guest).

Paul: Do you mean change the name of the Touch Pro from its present
default name of Touch_Pro2 to Pocket_PC, before I connect it to the
desktop PC? (If that's even possible...)
I'll get back on the case first thing tomorrow morning.

Sorry to jump in, but no, don't try to change the name to same one as the
iPaq's.
Try disabling "Advanced Network Functionality" on the TP2; on my TyTn II
it's Start/Settings/Connections(Tab)/USB-to-PC, I don't know if they
moved it on the TP2. This might get Activesync to "see" the device.

Thanks a bunch Todd, that fixed it! Sure am glad that you *did* jump
in
Here, the checkbox is under 'ActiveSync (Sync with Outlook)' and it's
called 'Enable faster data synchronization'. It was enabled by default
but now that I've disabled it the AS setup wizard did run. (Do you
know any more about this option BTW, in particular why it should cause
a problem?)
It seems to have synced successfully at first sight. At least, I see
files I recognise under C:\Docs\Touch_Pro2 My Documents. But I was a
bit worried by the message from the wizard saying something like 'AS
is already setup to sync with Microsoft Exchange; set up the types
required, etc'. For one thing I expected it to refer to Outlook, not
Exchange. (I have Outlook 2002 installed, from when I installed the
iPAQ 2210/2215.) And also the Quick Guide says "Clear the 'Synchronize
directly with a server running Microsoft Exchange check box and then
click Next." That seems almost at odds with what happened in practice.
Can anyone offer any advice about this Exchange stuff please? Should I
have 'Exchange' installed?

I don't know much about RNDIS (the "faster" connection,) I'm afraid- it
debuted with WM5, and connects devices to the PC as if they're network
cards, rather than serial-over-USB connections, like your iPaq.
Supposedly many 3rd-party firewalls block the advanced/faster connection.
As to Exchange, it sounds like either the device or the PC "thinks" it's
setup for an Exchange server..

No, I wasn't suggesting that you make them the same name, but two different
and distinct names that were also not the default names of the device.
Glad that fixed it. The Remote NDIS connection causes the device to appear
like an Ethernet adapter that you might plug into your USB connection on the
computer to add a new network connection. Of course, it's not a real
network connection, but doing that allows the ActiveSync guys to make all
ActiveSync communication look like simple network I/O. In theory, it makes
it more generic and therefore more portable. In practice, there are lots of
network protection software pieces running on PCs that can block the network
traffic between the device and the PC. For that reason, Microsoft added
that checkbox to allow you to fault back to the old way (basically like a
serial port), of communicating between device and PC. Of course, this means
that now the ActiveSync guys have to do the communications in two different
ways, so it's worse than it was before the new option...
On the Exchange thing, I think that you probably have Exchange settings
configured on the device end. How that happened if you don't use Exchange,
I don't know, unless perhaps the device is pre-configured with Exchange mail
for some hosted Exchange account. I can imagine this happening if you buy a
device from a carrier which pre-selects its own hosted Exchange scheme on
all devices. That is, you buy your device from ATT, say, and they set it up
for their ATT hosted Exchange mail, in hopes that, after the 1 month free
trial, you'll continue to pay them for it. That sounds like the sort of
thing that a carrier would do.

I'm not sure it's "worse" since the legacy connection type is required for
all supported pre-WM5 devices anyway. In addition, connection via BT is
supported, which, AFAIK, is essentially serial in nature as well.
Given the number of issues we see with AS/WMDC on this NG, I suspect keeping
multiple connection methods around is probably the least of their problems!

It does. I suspect something like that is going on, or perhaps Terry just
saw a generic Activesync error message that happened to mention Exchange
(like he tried to setup his connection settings on the Activesync "server"
settings page instead of elsewhere.) |

Bluetooth code can be written using the serial programming interface, or the
networking one. I'd think that they're probably using the network scheme.
You'd think that they wouldn't have to put effort into the non-networking
communication on the device for new devices, though, if the network
interface really worked reliably in the field. If they just needed to
support the old devices with the old comm methods, all the effort would be
on the PC side. Now, they have the effort on both sides for new devices, as
well as testing both comm methods with both new and old devices.

I have no expertise in that area, but I seem to recall that many people
having problems with RNDIS could connect via BT, so that might mean BT
connections are still serial based. (Wild semi-educated guess based on
purely anecdotal evidence on my part, of course!)

Excellent point. I concede the argument! |

It's just how the code is written on the device end that looks like a
network; it's just a layer that allows you to write your code so that it
looks just like code talking over a network, but that is actually using
Bluetooth as the transport. The actual Bluetooth connection to the PC
doesn't appear to the network components of XP as a "network adapter", so it
doesn't run afoul of the firewalls, VPN clients, etc. I don't know what the
real solution is, but MS seems worried about simplifying the development
effort, which might suggest that the ActiveSync team is too small for what
it has to do.
