Post subject: Messenger not working after 2210 ROM update
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>pocketpc (more info?)

Hi,

I've recently performed the latest ROM update for my 2210, and
everything seemed to be fine post-update. Until, that is, I attempted to
sign into MSN Messenger which reported "Logon to MSN Messenger Service
failed because the password is incorrect or the logon name foes not
exist. Enter the correct user name and password and try again. If the
problem continues, contact MSN."

My login details were still held but I have also re-entered them from
scratch. They still work from my PC so I don't think my account is
broken in any way. I have also tried a friends working details with no
success.

Has anyone else experienced this problem following the ROM update?

Being somewhat inexperienced with Pocket PCs, I followed HP's
instructions to the letter and performed a backup prior to the update
using iPaq Backup. I restored it afterwards, registry and all, and am
concerned that on old registry key for MSN Messenger is interfering with
the new version in the ROM update.

Thanks in advance for any help offered,

Maurice Kelly

You cannot restore a previous full backup after having updated to the
latest rom. Note, that the new rom has an update of messenger in it
as well as several other executables from windows itself. So, if you
restore files from another backup, in the case of MSN messenger, it
will overwrite the updated rom files and cause messenger to report a
username / pw failure, which in fact is not accurate.

You can restore your contacts and stuff from your pre-rom upgrade
backup, but not the rest.

How do I know this? I just went through the exact same thing you did.
Same error, same unit, same backup, same rom, and had to re-install
all my programs from scratch all over again.

Hope this helps!

Okay - can I perform a hard reset and get back to the post-update,
pre-backup restore version of the ROM? I presume at that point I could
restore my contacts/tasks/files from Outlook etc and then install all my
applications again?

If not, is it safe to reflash the ROM with the same update again?

Yeah. Hard reset will bring it back to normal with the new rom
post-update, and then just restore contacts / tasks / files. That way
you won't overwrite anything the new ROM has installed.

That's what I had to do, so far, no probs at all, runs great, MSN
works like it's supposed to, and so does everything else.

Have you downloaded the MSN Messenger update? MSN has updated the Messenger
infrastructure, and it requires updates on client applications.

Hi Mauricio,

I had applied that update not long after I started using the 2210 and
was using it successfully for several months.

I was under the impression that the ROM update included the MSN
Messenger update. However, to be on the safe side I did try applying the
update again with no success.

Note the error message I am receiving is not indicating an
incompatibility between client and server versions, rather it is saying
the my username/password is incorrect. The symptom indicating the need
for the Messenger update was "Logon to MSN messenger service failed
because the service is not compatible with this version of the program"
which is not what I am getting.

Thanks for the response

There should be no need, that update is included in the ROM update. I can
connect using MSN Messenger post update with no problems.

Are you by any chance using in your password or user name a character other
than A to Z, a to z, or 0 to 9? If so you might try setting up an account
using just the above an see if you can then log on

After updating the ROM, doing the restart, and placing the 2215 in the USB
cradle, won't active sync try to update the contacts/tasks/files and so on?
How does activesync know that those files missing on the pda were not deleted
and then try to do the same on the PC?

The reason it won't see the PIM entries as having been deleted, is that you
have a 'new' PPC.

If you did a restore, then it restores the device ID and Name and all the
PIM info (normally) and it is like things hadn't really changed. Of course,
restoring to the new OS version is not recommended and as we see, has
issues.

If you do the update, a complete ROM replacement, and rename the PPC with
the old name, AS will tell you there is already one by that name and prompt
you to change it. You would have to delete the old partnership from the PC
to re-establish a new partnership with the PPC named the same as it was.

Same thing happens with a hard reset. If you do that, rename the PPC back
to what it was and re-cradle, it will not be seen as the same partnership
and you will be greeted with a name conflict. It is essentially like getting
a new device out of the box.

I had similar fears so I copied all of the files from the PC into a
further backup folder that ActiveSync would have no record of.
Thankfully I didn't need it. When I finally re-established the
partnership I was asked if I wanted to combine the files on the PC and
the device when I performed my first sync. I did so, and all my files
appear to be there.

Excellent - I performed the hard reset and re-installed my apps.
Everything is running fine now - thanks to all who responded.

Dumb question time ... Where do I find the current (old name) of the PPC and
how will I rename it after the update?

AS will give the option to delete the old partnership -- correct?

Right, except I can do a full restore in that situation with sp backup?

You "name" your device in Settings | System | About | Device ID
| Device Name on your Pocket PC. If you can't remember what you named your
device
previously, you can still find that name in Activesync on your
desktop, File | Mobile Device, where it will give a list of
names that have a partnership with your desktop.

It won't give it, you will have to manually do this. Go to
Activesync on your desktop, File, choose the Mobile Device name
of which you want to delete the partnership, and delete the
partnership. You should do this while no Pocket PC is connected
to the desktop.

> Right, except I can do a full restore in that situation with sp backup?

Normally, yes. But after a ROM (system) update, that is not
advised.
