Archived from groups: microsoft>public>pocketpc (more info?)

I am considering trading in my Palm Tungsten T due to lack of an affordable
means to connect Palm products to WiFi. I don't want a Tungsten C (ie: with
WiFi built in) because the screen is too small and I hate that thumbpad
keyboard.

So, I said to myself, why not check out the other side of the fence? It's
almost like changing religions Smile but what is the best Pocket PC available
today??

Important factors include:

- screen size and quality
- processor speed
- amount of RAM
- possible built in WiFi
- NO thumbpad keyboards

Less important factors:

- size/weight
- overall sexyness - I don't care what it looks like.

I'm a fan of ASUS Pocket PC's because of speed and price, but the choices
are limited.
Good luck!

Considering your listed requirements, you should take a hard look at the HP
iPAQ 4150. The integrated wireless has been flawless for me, overall
performance has been excellent and the display is awesome for such a small
form factor. Having the integrated WLAN and BlueTooth makes it fine to have
only the SD card slot expansion option, and it keeps the unit much closer to
Palm size than others.

I have been surprised at the lack of posts in this group about problems with
the 4150 series, (most newer series ppcs seem to have some bug or other that
generates posts.) I have been 100% thrilled with my 4150.
Happy hunting.

I have the same Pocket PC and it is just great except it tends to lock up;
have to softset more than I care to. But it doesn't have built in WiFi. I
got a Socket WiFi adapter (CF) off their web site. My package is complete.

Easy.

Toshiba Genio e550g with XScale 400 MHz processor and CF/SD slots. Now get
this, a 4" screen (insert sinister evil laughter here).

One caveat, actually two, as a Computer Pro nobody beats Compaq/HP for
support and accessories and the Toshiba team is reportedly lacking in CS and
no PC2003 on the Genio but I still bought it anyways $249 at OfficeMax, it
sells for $500 at CompUSA. It is a full flight PDA.

That's the one my friend. Believe it or not, I was just looking at this
seconds before I read your post. It's mine.

What's the best? It's like asking someone what's the best car - it
depends on what you intend to use it for - a Farrari is no good off-road
and a Jeep is no good for racing. The best should be based on your
needs - The most common out there (and 'best') are HP/Compaq,
Toshiba and Dell. Most iPAQ are good but few offer all you might need
in a single package - 4XXX have small form factor but only offer 64meg
of memory. HP5550 and Toshiba e805 offer best memory (128meg) but
have large form factors. So I'd advise you to first workout what you
need and base your choice on that.

The best Pocket PC currently available is the HP IPAQ 4150 with built in
wifi, bluetooth, SDIO slot, 400Mhz Processor, 64k colour TFT, small form
factor/weight, excellent resolution, 64Meg built in RAM. Tradeoff is price
which is around $599 CDN. Happy New Year

If you find one that has the features you like, size and price, you can't go
wrong with any of the popular brands. They are all pretty good now. If you
are heavy into graphics, iPAQ and Toshiba have the nicest screens,
especially now that the Toshiba had the 640x480 res. If you need Bluetooth,
stick with the iPAQ, if you want the built in CF, stick with the Toshiba.
Find what you like, read the reviews and go on your own instincts.

Many Toshiba users would advise you to avoid Toshiba products.
Do a google search on disatisfied users who are not happy
campers with Toshiba.

I would point out 64 meg may be all you need. When I had my
HP548 I had 32 meg of memory. I now have all the memory I need
with my dell Axim which has 64 meg.

I am about to buy my first PDA in many years. I can't remenber my frist and
only one but, it had windows CE1. It never needed to be hard or soft reset.
When I look at the postings on this NG, I think I will go with Palm. All I
ever see is: soft or hard reset. You may say it's the software. But isn't
that part of the experience? We all need software.

I have the Dell Axim X5 with only 32MB RAM, a 300mhz processor, and
both an SD and CF card slot. It cost me under $200 new in October.
As for the speed and memory, I really can't tell how much better more
memory and speed would be. This one works perfectly well with what it
has and I use it for a LOT of stuff. You can also get these with 64MB
RAM and 400mhz processor. The X3 is the new model, running about
$340.

On top of that, Dell has an excellent tech support. They do their
stuff thru Airborne Express so you're not without your device for very
long. I have a refurbished laptop from them and it came standard with
a 1-year warranty. About 4 months after I bought it, the combo modem
quit working (I actually think I broke it by pushing in too hard on
it). I called Dell, they tried to talk me through a fix action,
couldn't do that, so they gave me a reference number and had me call
Airborne Express. AE came TO MY HOUSE the next day with a box and
packing material, packed my laptop and took it. I had my laptop back
3 days later, fixed. I never paid a single penny. I didn't even have
to leave my house. That's the kind of service I like. Also, when you
order anything, you have it in about 3 or 4 days.

Wow! So many responses! Thank you everybody. I am officially converted to
the PocketPC cause - at least until Palm cleans up its act and gets more
versatile.

I'm going to go with the Toshiba e750 or the e805 if I can afford it. I
don't really need the bluetooth that comes with most iPaqs, but I do need
the CF slots. I don't mind it being slightly bukier that some.

Anyone have this model who can tell me how the battery life is? That's the
one thing I haven't been able to figure out.
