Post subject: IPAQ owners - info please :)
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>pocketpc (more info?)

I started out with one of those old palm computers from HP, the ones
with a flip up top like a long, thin notebook. I even still have it.
Never got much use out of it, and got turned on to the Toshiba E740
about a year and a half ago. Used it happily until I got the V37 from
Viewsonic. Loved it, but after upgrading to WM2003, I find I'm less
than thrilled with the bugs they have in their implementation of 2003.

Looking for something else now. Want something with "room to stretch
my legs" so to speak, since one of my biggest problems with the V37 is
the tiny amount of memory.

I'm impressed with the 5550, but wondering what people think about it.
One of the things I really liked about the Viewsonic was the size.
But I also missed having built in 802.11, so I understand the tradeoff
and the price paid.

For the 5550 owners, what other devices have you had, and how do you
like the form factor of the 5550? What are your impressions with it
overall?

Thanks for any info.

John

Look at the 4155! I have one and love it...

This after owning a Velo 1, Velo 500, HP Jornada 690 (all HPCs), Areo 1200,
Casio EM-500, Jornada 568 and now the iPAQ 4100. The only point of
disappointment is the speed of the read and write to the SD card, something
that will be no better wih the 5550...

Just my $0.02...

I looked at the 5550 then went for the 5450 instead due to the consumer
iRDA facility. I can do a memory upgrade at some time in the future, but
it's impossible to add iRDA to the 5550 and I thought if I'm going to spank
the best part of £400 on a gadget I don't /really/ need it's got to have as
many bells, whistles and gee gaws as possible.

the lack of CF slot was a major bummer for me because I had already
bought into that technology quite heavily (digicam) but the expansion
jacket that dave found seems to be the answer to my problems:

http://tinyurl.com/2sjmy

wi-fi works, bluetooth works, it's all working just fine and seems to do
what it says on the tin in a most agreeable fashion but like any bit of
hi tec kit it needs an owner that doesn't mind RTFM and STFW.

I'll stick with PPC2002 for now until there's enough, widespread, support
and information etc for Linux then go over that.

Can it be dual booted, I wonder ?

*ARE* the 54xx series upgradable to 128MB? If so, sounds like a deal,
since I've found them for under $320.

Sure they are, as are many other 64M PPCs...However, mostly you don't get a
5500 out of that, you get a 5400 with 64M of RAM and a 64M RAM disk. The
RAM disk is a fast hard drive/flash card, however you want to look at it. It
doesn't give you more program space, other than giving you some other place
to install the programs you now have in RAM.

It's $129 BTW, Check out

Well, I think my piece of junk Viewsonic V37 (no wonder Microsoft was
giving them away for an MSDN promotion) has pushed me over the edge.
I'm fed up with this piece of junk. Yet again, after having to do yet
*another* complete rebuild from a hard boot (something I end up doing
every few days) it won't even power on now. I had just been using it
about 10 minutes prior, battery is fully charged. And I just finished
sticking a few hundred MB of applications on it.... sigh...

I've always hated Compaq since their merger with HP... The company I
worked at (miller brewing) used to use their servers exclusively until
that moment. The only decent thing HP ever put out was printers...
After the merger, we had so many problems with compaq quality. I've
never bought another compaq / HP product since that merger other than
a single photo printer. Looks like I may have to take the Compaq
plunge here this week...

Would be much easier if Viewsonic had some way for those of us who
were stupid enough to go to WM2003 to roll them back to 2002. Too bad
MSDN hadn't given away IPAQ PDA's... Or at least given away real,
honest to goodness paperweights. At least that way I would've known
what I have from the start, and wouldn't have spent the last three
weeks dealing with this PDA from hell since the 2003 upgrade.

they are in the UK so I suppose they are also available in the US ?

once my warranty runs out I'll get stuck in and do it.

I'd take a good look at all of your programs first. You may end up with the
same situation on another device.

The original thread stated all the things done so far - can't be any
of the apps since I can duplicate my ebook problems on the viewsonic
after a hard reset with NOTHING installed but a single ebook program
and an ebook, both loaded into main memory to remove any SD card
issues...

So it's definately something with the V37 and 2003 and ebook programs,
since they all act the exact same way and do the exact same thing,
even with a hard reset and nothing but the particular program
installed...

Worked fine in 2002 on the unit, but after the 2003 upgrade no more...
And the ebooks work fine on any other unit in any other reader, so
it's not corrupted files at least.

Which is OK I guess, since it gives me an excuse to buy a real PDA
again... And since this unit was free from MSDN, at least I didn't
waste any money on it, just on the SD wi-fi card that I can sell off
to someone who needs one.

Looks like an interesting little PC (OQO ultra personal computer) however
the keyboard would drive me nuts ! I wonder what the thing will cost also...

The iPaq 5550 is a excellent machine, fairly good battery life, great screen
and it just seems to be one of the more rugged iPaqs around and very few
user problems (except some with the automatic backlighting).
I ended up with a iPaq 4355 as I wanted the Wifi/Bluetooth/keyboard all in
one unit, but the 5550 was a very close second choice.
