Post subject: HP iPAQ rx1950 Pocket PC: can it also be used as a regular GSM mobile phone?
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>pocketpc (more info?)

Hi!
Forgive my ignorance, i am completely new to the area of PDAs...
I read in a review of this product, that this specific PDA can be used
as a mobile phone.
Can someone confirm whether this holds true or not? Can someone just
plug in the SIM card and that's it?
I am considering buying a new mobile phone handset anyway, but if this
PDA can indeed be used as mobile phone, i would rather give the extra
money and buy this instead. I think it would be worth, given the extra
functionalities it can provide as a PDA.
Thanks!

Thanks a lot for the reply.
So, if i understood the relevant blog entry properly, there exist other
PDAs that can be used
as mobile phones by using CF cards, provided they come with the
appropriate extension slot.
Nevertheless, these cards cost more than a mobile phone itself and also
there exist certain
technical 'difficulties' when using a PDA as a mobile phone so it is
not worth the fuss.
One question though....it says somewhere in the blog entry about CF
cards 'you can only use them for calling people with their wired
headset - meaning no Bluetooth and not even being able to use the
speaker/mike of the PDA'.
If someone wants to install and use Skype in the PDA, will they be able
to use the mike/speaker for talking/listening? Or similar to the CF
cards, an extra equipment will need to be plugged in to enable the
talking/listening functionality?
Thanks again for any answer...and apologies again for my ignorance.

Nope, it can't be used as a mobile phone - mobile phone cards are only
available in the CF format.

Not that they would be any good - even the CF-based mobile phone cards are
to be avoided. Please read http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?cat=74
for an explanation of this.

To a certain degreee - you will need to use echo cancellation unless your
PDA is specifically designed to be used with VoIP apps (for example, the
two-speaker Pocket Loox 720).
