A while ago I bought an external battery pack that runs on 4 AA alkaline
batterys and clips on to the cradle chare/sync port of the iPAQ.
I used it probably about twice, to run/recharge the iPAQ while away from any
mains power.
All seemed to be great, but a few days later, I did a soft reset, and the
thing totally refused to re start, nothing. It worked fine from in the
cradle, and the battery showing full charge 100% and not charging further.
Removing from cradle, the machine died completely, and putting back in to
cradle it re booted as from hard re set.
Bought new battery and all is well again.
Question is.....Do iPAQ batteries die suddenly like mine did, or did the
external battery pack cause its untimely demise. The external pack is so
useful, but do not want to risk trashing a new battery. |

I've never heard of one failing so quickly, but it really depends on
how much usage you were getting from the battery prior to it failing.
If it was only 30 minutes, then I suppose it's possible. I have an
old iPAQ I expect will die any day due to that fact...
I think the external chargers are just fine. If it's built right,
they "trickle charge" at the same voltage as your standard adapter. I
have one that's built wrong in fact and never had it blow out a
battery.

The same thing happened to my 3835 when I used one of those battery packs.
Someone on another board suggested that it might have been because I used
rechargeable AA batteries. They suggested non rechargeable batteries designed
for electronic devices. I have tried it successfully a few times.
Unfortunately the battery pack stopped working.
Do a search of my name "rocky" on this board for another thread about external
batteries within the past couple of months.
Thanks,

Funny that, I had used re chargable batteries as well now you mention it. I
had thought I used alkaline, but now remember I used NMiH ones. , but they
have lower voltage, strange.
I do not know how much use the iPAq had had, bought it off ebay, it looked
new, not a scratch or mark on screen or case, and all in original but opened
packing. I had been told it had not been used much. Up until the failure
the battery seemed to be fine, but I prob would not have noticed otherwise,
it was my first iPAQ. The new battery certainly does not seem to last
longer than the old one.
