My x50v appears to be charging off of the USB cable when connected to the
computer without the AC power adapter. It's a lot slower that with the power
adapter installed but it still happens. I'll go to bed at night with it
connected to the computer and the battery at 60% and when I get up in the
morning it's at 100%.
Has anybody else seen this or is this some strange fluke I'm seeing? |

Don't believe in reading manuals, eh?
If you had bothered to even open the manual, you would have known that it is
by design.

By the design, USB has 5 VDC in line. Certain devices like external hard
drives don't use it because they have their own power supplies. Mice
typically use it, because they need it. Other devices like PDAs can charge
off of it.

Hi Bobby,
The post is of interest, as it has transpired that many people are unable to
charge their X50s via USB due to it's above average power requirements.

I thought that such conditions were the reason behind the fast/slow setting
on the start/settis/usb charging page - in this case the x50 would be set
to "slow" , as in trickle charge.
Not the case? |

Well, you're right, it was in the manual, page 26. I hadn't bothered to look
back at the manual after the first run throught it because I found it is almost
useless. (just like Bobby's smart ass attitude).
I hadn't been seeing the same thing happen at work because I have an unpowered
USB hub connected to my laptop and it as always plugged in using the cradle.
I guess it wouldn't hurt to read the book again to see what else I missed or am
screwing up!

Depends what you are charging from. My tablet PC does not really put out
enough to keep a rechargeable cordless mouse charged up. When I plug it
into a AC USB charger with 1.0 Amp output, the charging light on the mouse
charger really glows compared to it hardly lighting when connected to the
tablet.
Same thing would apply to a PDA.

Take a look on the www.aximsite.com boards. There's been fair bit of
discussion about this. This is how people like me, who are still waiting for
X50vs pass the time...;>(

Note that the Dell is designed to charge from the USB port with the device
off, and not do so when the device is on. That is noticeable on the charge
light, which only glows when the Axim is connected and off.

I think your PDA is switch off at night, is that correct ? The USB can
charge your PDA only when it's switched off.

What cable are you using ? What is the model of your PC ?
I read that you can't charge the PDA using the Dell Sync Cable with the
PDA switch on due to the wiring of the cable. If you are using other
cable, it would depend on the USB port on your PC. |

My X50v is a fairly recent model, and I can confirm that it will charge from
the USB cable even with the unit ON. I've never tried charging from less
than half charge however.

I'm using a USB cable I bought from Ebay. The PC is an el cheapo as
purchased by company IT department.
Is it possible Dell have made a change to the X50v units? At any rate, it
definitely charges with the unit on. In fact, becaue of that, I never switch
it off when it is connected.
