Thanks, but it turns out to be more complicated. Temporarily removing
TIMES.TTF from the scene made the text in one of my three problem
ebooks viewable, but in the other two it remains blank.
FWIW (I suspect it's an associated symptom), in the longer of those,
here are the respective last page numbers:
PPC - text OK: 2,199
PPC - blank : 29,671
PC : 665
Next thing I tried, based on a suggestion I'd found via googling, was
converting one of the problem LIT files, let's call it A-Blank.LIT,
with clit.exe. I then opened the many resulting HTM files and found
that all the 'normal page' chapters (as distinct from Intro, About,
Contents, etc) used Tahoma text. I arbitrarily changed that to Arial
(tedious over 25 chapters) and then used Readerworks Standard to make
a new LIT file. That was OK. And still OK when I reinstated TIMES.TTF.
Then, focusing on another problem file, B-Blank.LIT, I tried some
simpler steps. I copied TIMES.TTF across from my PC to PPC. After a
soft reset I tried reading B-Blank.LIT again. That made no difference;
still no text, still 29,671 pages.
I then copied Tahoma.TTF across to the PPC. (That is, after a 15 min
delay due to an irritating intermittent problem I've reported before,
which makes 'exploring' my Mobile Device folders impossible. Folders
just come up empty, or don't open at all. Eventually have to close all
down and start again from top.) That made no diffrence either.
I then deleted B-Blank.LIT on the PPC and copied it across from the
PC, in case the 'conversion' process was involved. But no change.
Then I removed TIMES.TTF (temporarily) and TAHOMA.TTF (permanently),
soft reset, and tried again. No change.
Altering the font size in Settings from Smallest to Small made no
difference (apart from increasing pages from 29,671 to 31,511).
So it looks like the only way to make this ebook readable is to go
through the same tedious conversion and rebuilding procedure.
Sure would like to understand what's going on here!
