Archived from groups: microsoft>public>pocketpc, others (more info?)

Several of my MS Reader (LIT) ebooks display no text. Googling found
several references to this. The simplest fix seesm to be to locate (on
the PPC) the file \Windows\Fonts\TIMES.TTF, and delete it. (Or, more
cautiously, rename it as I've done.)

But what sidse effects might there be? Is the absence of TIMES.TTF
going to cause trouble elsewhere?

And is there a better fix for this 'balnk text' problem please?

I cannot see any reason that the Times.ttf file would cause problems for MS
Reader, unless the font was corrupt and MS Reader was trying to use it.

I would not delete it ! You don't know which programs use this as the
default font as it is one of the more popular ones. You could rename it (be
sure to remember the new name) and try it and see what happens. In looking
thru my iPaq 4355, I did not find any programs that use's Times as a default
font, it was not even listed in Pocket Word as a optional font. So my
guess....you would not miss it.
Let me know if that cleans up MS Reader !

If it's a potentially damaged font why just not replace it with either a
backed up copy, or a new copy? The advice don't delete it is fine as far as
it goes, but doesn't lead to a resolution. The OP has renamed it so he can
name it back if a program fails for want of that font which is good
practice.

If it's not an M$ standard installed font on the PPC it has either been
downloaded separately and installed, or is from an installed program. If
Reader insists on using it you'd think it has installed it (not on my copy)
or Reader has become corrupt itself if there seems to be no font change
option- or the book(s).if they set the font to be used.

Anyway, you can use desktop fonts on the PPC so if Times works on your
desktop why not just copy that file to the PPC?

Thanks, but it turns out to be more complicated. Temporarily removing
TIMES.TTF from the scene made the text in one of my three problem
ebooks viewable, but in the other two it remains blank.

FWIW (I suspect it's an associated symptom), in the longer of those,
here are the respective last page numbers:
PPC - text OK: 2,199
PPC - blank : 29,671
PC : 665

Next thing I tried, based on a suggestion I'd found via googling, was
converting one of the problem LIT files, let's call it A-Blank.LIT,
with clit.exe. I then opened the many resulting HTM files and found
that all the 'normal page' chapters (as distinct from Intro, About,
Contents, etc) used Tahoma text. I arbitrarily changed that to Arial
(tedious over 25 chapters) and then used Readerworks Standard to make
a new LIT file. That was OK. And still OK when I reinstated TIMES.TTF.

Then, focusing on another problem file, B-Blank.LIT, I tried some
simpler steps. I copied TIMES.TTF across from my PC to PPC. After a
soft reset I tried reading B-Blank.LIT again. That made no difference;
still no text, still 29,671 pages.

I then copied Tahoma.TTF across to the PPC. (That is, after a 15 min
delay due to an irritating intermittent problem I've reported before,
which makes 'exploring' my Mobile Device folders impossible. Folders
just come up empty, or don't open at all. Eventually have to close all
down and start again from top.) That made no diffrence either.

I then deleted B-Blank.LIT on the PPC and copied it across from the
PC, in case the 'conversion' process was involved. But no change.

Then I removed TIMES.TTF (temporarily) and TAHOMA.TTF (permanently),
soft reset, and tried again. No change.

Altering the font size in Settings from Smallest to Small made no
difference (apart from increasing pages from 29,671 to 31,511).

So it looks like the only way to make this ebook readable is to go
through the same tedious conversion and rebuilding procedure.

Sure would like to understand what's going on here!

I didn't expect it to be as simple as making a font available to your
system, but making the font available is easy.
Best of luck.
