Hmmm... I don't mean to be argumentative, but I'd question both these
responses. The OP didn't specify which OS he was using, but I guess it
doesn't really matter. AFAIK, on the Dell X50's (and X51's, for that
matter) the ROM is used both for the operating system and as Built In
Storage(BIS) in WM2003 and Persistant Storage in WM5. Again, AFAIK, one of
the nice things about the BIS in WM2003 and Persistant Storage in WM5 is
that it will survive dead batteries, hard resets, etc. If nothing else, the
ROM is writable; that's how the upgrades are done. There are ways to take a
snapshot of your entire ROM for restoring, but you'll probably void your
warranty and cause Dell service personel to laugh at you if you do it and
brick your machine. Here's the thread, though:
