I woder if anyone can help - I have just got a new Dell
Axim X50V to replace my Treo 600. I'd been using the Palm
for around a year, since getting rid of my iPAQ 1940. Now
I am worrying about the speed of the Axim....

It's got a 600Mhz+ processor yet screen refreshes are very
slow, particulary with Pocket Informant. I am trying to
think back to my 1940 and I am SURE it was faster and more
responsive than this.

Are there any tweaks or settings I need to look at? What
are the good (free) benchmarking utilities to make sure I
don't have a dud one here?

Your Axim has the new Intel2700G graphics accelerator chip...not may apps
exist to take advantage of it yet. Your Axim also has a VGA screen, with 4
times as many pixels as your earlier models, so of course a screen refresh
is gonna take longer.
For benchmarking, do a google search for sqb benchmark.

I assumed that this would really be more of an issue with
games. I assumed that something like Pocket Informant, as
it isn't fast moving/high definition graphics, would be
okay. It coule be that it's moved on quite a bit from the
old version I used to own, so maybe there's just more in
it and it's got a bit bloated.

Yes - but then with a dedicated chip and the faster main
processor, I assumed that even if it didn't appear any
faster than my old 1940, then at least it wouldn't be any
slower.

Thanks - have downloaded, installed and am waiting for it
to finish now.

Unless it's been updated, it will not give true results for the X50v, as the
benchmarks were not written to take into account VGA or 3D or graphics on a
separate chip. Of course, if it has been updated....

I think hel@40th is steering you on the right track.

Don't know if it's been updated or not - downloaded the newest
one I could see and these are the results:

Seems it hasn't.

If you do a Google search for "Dell axim x50v reviews" you'll find that the
more in depth reviews pick up on the fact that the spb Benchmark programme
hasn't been modified to properly check the x50v.
