Post subject: Active Sync can't find my IPAQ on either of my two desktops
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>pocketpc>activesync (more info?)

I had to reformat thanks to one of the recent worms. Only
one of my two desktops (hiome and work) was affected. Now
that both machines are running properly, neither of them
can find my IPAQ. I have tried uninstalling Active Sync,
and doing a warm reset of the IPAQ. Nothing. My pocket
PC is useless if I cannot synch it with my desk machine.

What do I do now ?

Thanks for your help

FYI

My equipment is a Dell workstation running Win 2000 / and
a Dell portable running Win 2000, IPAQ 3955 running pocket
PC 3.0.11171.

I am beginning to year for my Palm which I gave to my wife
and which continues to run perfectly with no synch
problems of any kind.

Are there any error messages that show up? Is everything set correctly
in File -> Connection Settings (ie USB is enabled)? Do you get the
sound that a USB/removable peripheral has been attached?

No error messages ... it just goes through its little
dance looking for "a device" and finds none after having
checked the three com ports and usb. Yes USB is enabled.
I am using a 4 port hub, but the other three devices
attached are working fine, and switching ports makes no
difference. When I plug the IPAQ into the cradle I do not
get the "tinkle" that I used to get.

Try plugging it directly into the computer - not through the USB hub.

Well thatr got a rise out of windows which said it saw a
new device and asked for a file. The file was on the
actine sync disk. But when the file installed, we were
back to square one. A S looked for the device and found
none.
Can I solve this by clearing / reseting the IPAQ. There
is nothing on it that doesn't reside in Outlook or
somewhere else that I can recover.

Well... that's a step forward. Try reinstalling ActiveSync at this
point, and perform a soft reset of your Pocket PC. Also check your
connection settings in ActiveSync on your PC (File -> Connection
Settings - ensure USB is selected) and on your Pocket PC (Start ->
ActiveSync, Tools -> Options, PC tab, Options button, "Enable PC
Sync..." should be set to USB).

Still no go. Now I've checked my office machine (which
used to synch up fine) and it too cannot "find" my IPAQ.
Have reinstalled active synch and used soft reset (both
multiple times). There is something in either the
portable PC or the desk machines that is preventing the AS
software from finding the IPAQ.

Now my IPAQ is just an expensive paperweight.

FRUSTRATION !!!

You didn't disable DCOM or anything like that did you?

(you installed the MS03-026 patch instead?)

Cheers

If it can't find it after a soft reset, you may want to try a
last-ditch effort - a hard reset.
