buddy and I trying to figure out how to open the side cover upper latch
on his recently-aquired G4 tower case...seems like it "might have
something to do with" the upper -rear- 'sliding latch' with the hole in
its center, the one at the top rear of the case, but all efforts (and
various combinations tried) all to no avail...side center latch seems to
be 'mechanically binding' somehow...I could'a pulled harder, but didn't
want to break off the upper side-center clear latch handle...
I assured him (that once we figured it out) NO screws or allen-heads
needed to be removed to open the case, and that it would "split open
easily and beautifully, with very little effort" (but it's been many yrs
since I was to my local mac club meeting, so please forgive me and help)
thanks for advice

The thing on the rear of the case is a place to put a padlock to prevent
someone from (easily) opening the case. You'll want to make sure it's
pushed in as far as it can go. There should be a spring that retracts
it, but there may be a mechanical problem right there.
On the other hand, my wife had a Sawtooth G4 that did have a moderately
bound-up release lever. Just be firm but gentle once you've ensured that
the security thing on the back is disengaged. It'll pop loose. Once
you've got the case open, you may even be able to see and adjust the
part that's actually binding.

Just pull the side latch firmly. There'll be a bit of resistance. On my
G4, it pulls out about an inch before the case opens.
If it seems to be stuck, check the sliding latch on the back, it should be
pushed in as far as it will go. That's a security latch; when you pull it
out and put a padlock or cable through it, the case can't be opened. It
should be spring-loaded so it retracts when not locked.
If the security latch doesn't seem to go in far enough to unlock the case,
push the case cover firmly to make sure it's closed all the way, push the
security latch in, then try pulling on the side latch again. |
