Can't open files in powerpoint.

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)

Says that the files "an older format which is not supported". "Powerpoint cannot open the type of file represented by Macintosh".

Any help would be greatly appreciated... I am thinking that I would need to get an older version of powerpoint to view these files?

Check your update level of Office ‹ odds are you're lacking at least one.
The current is SP2 (12.2.0) for the applications plus the 12.2.1 update for
the suite. Once you're updated repair disk permissions, restart & see how
things go.
