I am thinking about buying one of the new G5 systems, but I will not
have a display for it initially. Is there any way to use my G4
Powerbook (17" Alum, original model) as the display for the desktop?

Only via remote control across a network, by using either VNC, Timbuktu
or Apple Remote Desktop, installed on each machine. You will, of course,
need access to a monitor initially for the G5 so you can configure it to
run in 'headless' mode *after* you've removed the monitor, and have a
network connection (preferably 100-base-T) between them.

Once that is done, you can use your PowerBook to open a remote
connection to the desktop machine, where it will appear in its own
window on your PowerBook's screen.
