I was having a debate with someone about iPods. Unfortunately, neither
of us have much experience with them, so we were arguing based on our
own feelings.

He told me that he would never buy an iPod since they do not play mp3s.
I was pretty sure they did, but he didn't believe me. Later, I was able
to easily verify that they do by checking out the technical specs.

But my question for you guys is, have all iPod generations always
played mp3s? Was there ever a model that didn't play mp3s?

Your friend is wrong, as you found out. I think the only portable
memory or hard-drive-based music player I've seen that WON'T play MP3s
is one built by Sony -- everything had to be converted to their
proprietary ATRAC format. (I believe that's been changed now.)

No. Every iPod ever built has been capable of playing MP3s. The iPod
predates iTunes use of the AAC format, in fact.
